OPEN HEAVEN 1 NOVEMBER 2025 TODAY DEVOTIONAL

TOPIC: GODLY COUNSEL

MEMORISE:
Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
Proverbs 19:20

READ: Exodus 18:13-26:
13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.
14 And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?
15 And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:

16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.
17 And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.
25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

RCCG OPEN HEAVEN 1 NOVEMBER 2025 TODAY MESSAGE

In 2 Kings 5:1-14, Naaman, a commander in the Syrian army, came to Elisha because he needed healing from leprosy. The prophet instructed him to do something he felt was way below his status – he was to dip himself seven times in River Jordan, a river he considered to be way below other prestigious rivers in his home country.

Angrily, Naaman rejected Elisha’s instruction and was already on his way back to Syria when one of his servants counselled him to obey the prophet’s instructions. Thank God he heeded his servant’s counsel and did as Elisha had instructed. He was cured of his leprosy immediately, and his skin became like that of a newborn. If he had rejected his servant’s simple advice, he would have had to live the rest of his life as a leper.

The greatest miracle of your life might be tied to hearing and obeying godly counsel. It is important to never ignore godly counsel, no matter the age or status of the person or people giving the counsel.

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Proverbs 11:14

In today’s Bible reading, Jethro travelled to the wilderness to visit Moses, his son-in-law. During his visit, he observed how Moses attended to every single issue that arose in the camp of the Israelites all by himself from morning to night, such that at the end of every day, he was always exhausted.

After making this observation, Jethro counselled Moses on what to do. He told him to choose rulers of different ranks from among the people who could also judge matters that arose within the camp. Although Jethro didn’t have the burning bush experience that Moses had, Moses listened to him and received God’s counsel through him.

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. James 4:6

Humility or meekness is an ingredient for receiving God’s grace. You need a meek heart to properly discern when God is speaking through someone and receive what He has to say to you through them. Moses was known as the meekest man on earth (Numbers 12:3), and his meekness was what made him able to receive counsel from people who seemed not to have attained his spiritual height and influence.

No matter how high you get, God wants you to remain meek. Ask God for a meek heart to receive His counsel through whatever vessel or method He chooses to use.

PRAYER POINT

Father, please give me a meek heart so that I can receive Your counsel through whatever vessel or method You choose to use to speak, in Jesus’ name.

OPEN HEAVEN DEVOTIONAL 1 NOVEMBER 2025 COMMENTARY

MEMORISE: Proverbs 19:20 (KJV)
“Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.”
This verse establishes a direct link between our willingness to receive counsel and our future success and wisdom. It frames heeding advice not as a sign of weakness, but as a strategic investment in a victorious destiny.

BIBLE READING: Exodus 18:13-26
This passage is a masterclass in leadership and the practical application of godly counsel:

  • v. 13-18: Moses, despite his anointing, operates in an unsustainable model, leading to personal burnout and potential bottlenecks for the people.
  • v. 19-23: Jethro, as a God-sent counselor, provides a structured, scalable solution that prioritizes Moses’s divine calling while empowering others.
  • v. 24-26: Moses’s humility in heeding this advice leads to effective implementation, demonstrating that true strength lies in teachability.

The Power of a Meek Heart: Receiving God’s Counsel Through Any Vessel

Pastor E.A. Adeboye uses the powerful examples of Naaman and Moses to drive home a critical spiritual principle: our breakthrough is often contingent not just on hearing God’s voice, but on our humility to receive His instruction through unexpected channels. The devotional underscores that pride is a primary blocker of divine grace and miracle-working power.

1. The Nature of Godly Counsel

Divine Origin, Human Vessel:
Godly counsel is wisdom that originates from God (James 1:5) but is often delivered through human instruments. It is characterized by its alignment with Scripture and its fruit in producing peace and order (1 Corinthians 14:33).

The Pride Filter:
The greatest barrier to receiving counsel is pride. As Daddy Adeboye notes, James 4:6 reveals that God actively resists the proud. Pride makes us filter advice through our status, education, or personal preferences, often causing us to miss a word from the Lord.

2. Biblical Case Studies in Counsel

The devotional presents two starkly different men who both needed humility to access their miracle and manage their mission.

CharacterThe SituationThe Counsel & The StruggleThe Outcome of Obedience
Naaman (2 Kings 5)A mighty commander afflicted with leprosy. To dip 7x in the Jordan. He struggled with pride and preconceived notions of how his miracle should happen.Complete healing and restoration. His flesh became like that of a “little child,” signifying newness.
Moses (Exodus 18)A great leader on the verge of burnout, limiting his own effectiveness. To delegate authority and share the load. He struggled with the potential of receiving advice from a “less spiritual” source.Sustainable leadership, preserved energy for his primary calling, and the establishment of a just system.

3. The Safeguard of Multiple Counsellors

The Principle of Safety (Proverbs 11:14):
Daddy Adeboye highlights that relying on a “multitude of counsellors” is a divine safety mechanism. This does not mean following every opinion, but subjecting decisions to the scrutiny of mature, spiritually-aligned believers to confirm God’s will.

Protection from Error:
A single perspective can be flawed or biased. Multiple godly perspectives help to bring clarity, confirm direction, and protect us from deception or the limitations of our own understanding (Proverbs 15:22).

4. The Key Ingredient: Cultivating Meekness

Meekness is Not Weakness:
Moses, the meekest man on earth (Numbers 12:3), was also the most powerful leader of his time. Meekness is strength under control; it is the power to be teachable, to submit to God’s process without rebellion, regardless of the vessel He uses.

The Grace Connection:
A meek heart is a grace magnet. When we humble ourselves, we position ourselves to receive the unmerited favor and enabling power of God (James 4:6). This grace is often the very thing needed to obey the difficult or humbling counsel we receive.

How to Cultivate a Meek and Receptive Heart

1. Acknowledge Your Blind Spots:
Consciously recognize that you do not see all things clearly. Your perspective, no matter how anointed, is limited. This creates a default posture of openness to insight from others.

2. Value Wisdom Over Status:
Intentionally seek and value advice based on its biblical soundness and practical wisdom, not the title, age, or social standing of the person giving it. God spoke through a donkey to Balaam (Numbers 22:28-30); He can use anyone.

3. Practice Immediate, Partial Obedience:
When you receive counsel that aligns with Scripture, obey immediately in the parts you understand. Like Naaman, your healing is in the obedience to the instruction, not in your feelings about it.

Warning: The High Cost of a Closed Spirit
Rejecting godly counsel is a form of pride that God resists. It can lead to:

  • Stagnation: Like Naaman almost returning to Syria unhealed.
  • Burnout: Like Moses would have experienced without Jethro.
  • Catastrophic Failure: As seen in King Rehoboam, who rejected the counsel of elders and lost a kingdom (1 Kings 12:13-16).

Conclusion: Your Pathway to Wisdom and Preservation

Pray this:
“Father, uproot every seed of pride from my heart. Give me the meek and humble spirit of Christ to recognize and receive Your counsel, whether it comes from a prophet, a servant, or a stranger. Help me to value Your instruction above my status, so that I may be wise, preserved, and walk in the fullness of my destiny, in Jesus’ name.”

Action Steps:

  • Identify Your Jethros: Who are the 2-3 mature, trustworthy believers in your life you can go to for honest, godly counsel on major decisions?
  • Obey the Nudge: Is there a piece of godly advice you have been resisting? Write it down, pray over it, and take the first step of obedience today.
  • Study Meekness: Read and meditate on Numbers 12:3, Matthew 11:29, and 1 Peter 5:5-6 this week. Ask God to make these scriptures a reality in your life.

Remember: Your greatest miracle or most effective leadership strategy may be hidden in a counsel you have been too proud to hear. Humble yourself and receive it.

“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” (Proverbs 11:14). Be safe.
