OPEN HEAVENS 22 AUGUST 2026 TODAY DEVOTIONAL
TOPIC: BREAKING COVENANTS II
MEMORISE:
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
1 John 4:4
READ: 2 Corinthians 5:17-19
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
RCCG OPEN HEAVENS 22 AUGUST 2026 TODAY MESSAGE
Years ago, one of my daughters in the Lord came to me and said, “Daddy, a young man approached me and said he wants to marry me.” I congratulated her, but she replied, “Daddy, my father told me that I was dedicated to a river goddess when I was born, and a covenant was made that whoever I marry is going to die on our wedding day. I don’t want the young man to die.” | told her that I know someone stronger than the river goddess.
We prayed a simple prayer, and she left. The next time I saw her, she was happily married and already had a baby. I declare that any evil force that might be hindering your progress is destroyed today, in Jesus’ name.
A new and greater covenant can cancel a previously existing one. For instance, if you want to break a covenant with someone, all you need to do is enter into a covenant with someone greater; the greater fellow can release you from the lesser person’s covenant by force. If a person enters into a covenant with the devil, the moment he or she enters into a covenant with God, He will wipe out all evil covenants from the fellow’s life.
God’s covenant is superior to any other covenant. Our God is stronger than the strongest; therefore, once a person enters into a covenant with Him, He will bind any strong man who was previously in charge of the fellow’s life and throw him out.
It is also important to note that the devil still seeks to retain his strongholds in the lives of people even after they have become born again. A stronghold is a deeply entrenched evil pattern that the devil has instilled in a person, and it must be addressed.
Otherwise, the person will continue to operate under its influence even after he or she has become born again. Such strongholds typically include bitterness, pride, generational curses, anger, and other similar issues.
Beloved, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 urges us to pull down strongholds and cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. If you are a party to any evil covenant or are under the influence of any demonic stronghold, cry out to God today to deliver you by His mighty power.
I join my faith with yours and decree that you are completely free from any evil covenant or demonic stronghold that might be in your life, in Jesus’ name.
KEY POINT
Having a covenant with God annuls every evil covenant in a person’s life.

OPEN HEAVENS DEVOTIONAL 22 AUGUST 2026 COMMENTARY
MEMORISE: 1 John 4:4
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
The power of God within you is greater than any power against you. No evil covenant, demonic stronghold, or force of darkness can stand against the One who lives in you.
BIBLE READING: 2 Corinthians 5:17-19
This passage declares that if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation. Old things have passed away; all things have become new. God has reconciled us to Himself through Christ and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. In Christ, your past is wiped away—including every evil covenant and stronghold.
The Covenant with the River Goddess—Broken by a Greater Covenant
“Years ago, one of my daughters in the Lord came to me and said, ‘Daddy, a young man approached me and said he wants to marry me.’ I congratulated her, but she replied, ‘Daddy, my father told me that I was dedicated to a river goddess when I was born, and a covenant was made that whoever I marry is going to die on our wedding day. I don’t want the young man to die.’”
| The Evil Covenant | The Threat |
|---|---|
| Dedicated to a river goddess at birth | Whoever she married would die |
| An ancient covenant binding her future | She lived under fear |
“I told her that I know someone stronger than the river goddess.”
| The Response | The Result |
|---|---|
| “I know someone stronger” | The covenant was broken |
| A simple prayer | She was set free |
| Trust in God’s power | She married happily |
“We prayed a simple prayer, and she left. The next time I saw her, she was happily married and already had a baby.”
| Before Jesus | After Jesus |
|---|---|
| Bound by a covenant of death | Set free by the power of God |
| Afraid to marry | Happily married with a child |
| Under the river goddess | Under the covenant of the Most High |
“I declare that any evil force that might be hindering your progress is destroyed today, in Jesus’ name.”
A New Covenant Cancels the Old
“A new and greater covenant can cancel a previously existing one. For instance, if you want to break a covenant with someone, all you need to do is enter into a covenant with someone greater; the greater fellow can release you from the lesser person’s covenant by force.”
| The Principle | The Application |
|---|---|
| A greater covenant cancels a lesser one | God’s covenant is superior to any evil covenant |
| The greater party can release you by force | Jesus has already defeated every power |
| You are free from the old bond | The new covenant sets you free |
“If a person enters into a covenant with the devil, the moment he or she enters into a covenant with God, He will wipe out all evil covenants from the fellow’s life.”
Colossians 2:14 – “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.”
| What God Does | How He Does It |
|---|---|
| Wipes out evil covenants | Through the blood of Jesus |
| Cancels the handwriting against us | Nails it to the cross |
| Sets you free | By His superior power |
“God’s covenant is superior to any other covenant. Our God is stronger than the strongest; therefore, once a person enters into a covenant with Him, He will bind any strong man who was previously in charge of the fellow’s life and throw him out.”
Strongholds: The Devil’s Grip After Salvation
“It is also important to note that the devil still seeks to retain his strongholds in the lives of people even after they have become born again. A stronghold is a deeply entrenched evil pattern that the devil has instilled in a person, and it must be addressed.”
| Strongholds Are | Examples |
|---|---|
| Deeply entrenched evil patterns | Bitterness |
| Instilled by the devil | Pride |
| Must be addressed | Generational curses |
| Can persist after salvation | Anger, fear, addiction |
“Otherwise, the person will continue to operate under its influence even after he or she has become born again.”
| If You Do Not Address Strongholds | The Result |
|---|---|
| You remain in bondage | You operate under their influence |
| You are not fully free | The enemy retains a foothold |
| Your destiny is limited | You struggle in areas you should overcome |
Pull Down Strongholds
“Beloved, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 urges us to pull down strongholds and cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.”
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 – “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God.”
| The Weapons | What They Do |
|---|---|
| Mighty through God | Pull down strongholds |
| Cast down imaginations | Destroy the lies of the enemy |
| Bring every thought captive | Submit to the obedience of Christ |
How to Break Evil Covenants and Strongholds (Practical Steps)
Based on Daddy Adeboye’s teaching, here is how to receive complete freedom:
1. Recognize That Greater Is He in You
1 John 4:4 – “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
No covenant, no stronghold, no demonic power is greater than the Holy Spirit in you.
2. Enter into Covenant with God
If you have not done so, surrender your life to Jesus. Enter into the new covenant by faith. God will break every evil covenant.
3. Confess and Renounce Evil Covenants
If you know you have been dedicated to an idol, a goddess, or any demonic force, renounce it. Say: “I break every covenant with any evil power. I renounce it in Jesus’ name.”
4. Ask God to Break Strongholds
Pray: “Lord, break every stronghold in my life—bitterness, pride, anger, fear, generational curses. Set me free.”
5. Live in the Freedom of the New Covenant
Do not go back. Do not revisit what God has broken. Walk in your freedom. Live as a new creation.
Warning: Strongholds Must Be Addressed, Not Ignored
Daddy Adeboye’s devotional carries an urgent warning: salvation breaks the power of sin, but strongholds must be specifically addressed.
| If You Ignore Strongholds | The Result |
|---|---|
| They remain active | You operate under their influence |
| The enemy retains a foothold | You struggle unnecessarily |
| Your freedom is incomplete | You do not walk in full victory |
Conclusion: Your Prayer for Complete Freedom
Daddy Adeboye closes with a decree of freedom over every evil covenant and demonic stronghold. Receive it by faith.
Pray this:
“Lord Jesus, I thank You that greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. I renounce every evil covenant made for me or by me. I break every covenant with any idol, demon, or dark power. I cancel every generational curse and stronghold that has held me captive. I enter into covenant with You. I am a new creation. Old things have passed away. All things have become new. I pull down every stronghold. I cast down every imagination that exalts itself against Your knowledge. I am free. Completely free. In Jesus’ mighty name.”
Action Steps:
- The Covenant Audit: Have you ever been dedicated to an idol, a river goddess, a cult, or any demonic power? Renounce it today. Speak it out.
- The Stronghold Check: Are there areas where you struggle consistently—bitterness, pride, anger, fear, or addiction? Ask God to break the stronghold.
- The Freedom Declaration: Declare daily: “I am in covenant with God. Greater is He in me. I am free from every evil covenant and stronghold.”
