OPEN HEAVEN 29 NOVEMBER 2025 TODAY DEVOTIONAL

TOPIC: SOURCES OF PROPHECY I

MEMORISE:
Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;
Ezekiel 14:4

READ: Ezekiel 14:1-7:
1 Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.
2 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
3 Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?
4 Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the Lord will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;
5 That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.

6 Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
7 For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the Lord will answer him by myself:

RCCG OPEN HEAVEN 29 NOVEMBER 2025 TODAY MESSAGE

Prophecies come from three major sources: the devil, the human spirit, and the Holy Spirit. Today, I will discuss prophecies from the human spirit.

When a prophecy comes from people’s spirits, they will say things that they sense will happen, but most times, they won’t happen.

Many times, a person could get excited and think, in that moment, that he or she has heard from God; however, it could be that the person only heard from his or her human spirit. This is why you must put your emotions in check whenever you want to hear from God so that you won’t hear from your human spirit and assume you heard from God.

When you are expecting to hear from God, and your mind is fixed on a particular result that you want, you will likely hear a confirmation of that result from your human spirit and assume that God has spoken.

When I was much younger in ministry and there were signs that I would be travelling frequently on ministerial assignments, an airline offered me some really good packages.

I was excited by the offer and prophesied that the airline would prosper and never suffer any disaster. Shortly after my declaration, the airline suffered a plane crash. I could have just prayed for them and blessed them; instead, I prophesied based on my emotions.

If you do not let go of your emotions and allow God to sincerely search your heart, you will hear the idols of your heart giving you the go-ahead when you approach God for His counsel in prayer.

For example, if a young lady is asking God about which one of her suitors is His choice, she needs to control her emotions despite her personal preference and give God total control concerning the matter if she really wants to hear from Him. If she asks God about His choice but discovers that her heart is fixed on the one she likes during her prayers, she should find a neutral person to pray with her because she just might hear from her human spirit telling her to go ahead with her preference. She must also genuinely want to hear from God because today’s memory verse says that if you approach a prophet with idols in your heart, God will answer you according to those idols.

Beloved, train your human spirit to totally submit to God so that whenever you need to hear Him, your emotions won’t interfere with His counsel.

KEY POINT

Father, please search me and remove every idol in my heart that can prevent me from hearing Your voice accurately.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR

1 Corinthians 1-4

HYMN 33: GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH!

OPEN HEAVEN DEVOTIONAL 29 NOVEMBER 2025 COMMENTARY

MEMORISE: Ezekiel 14:4 (KJV)
“Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;”
This is a sobering spiritual law: if we approach God with “idols in our heart”—preferences, desires, or strongholds we are unwilling to surrender—God may answer us according to those idols, allowing us to be deceived by the desires of our own human spirit rather than receiving His pure word.

BIBLE READING: Ezekiel 14:1-7
This passage provides the biblical foundation for the danger of inner idols:

  • v. 1-3: The elders of Israel come to Ezekiel to inquire of the Lord. However, God reveals to Ezekiel that these men have “set up their idols in their heart.” Their inward devotion is divided.
  • v. 4-5: God declares His response: He will answer them according to their idols. The purpose is to “take hold of their hearts” and bring them back to Himself.
  • v. 6-7: The call to repentance is clear: “Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.” Cleansing from inner idols is a prerequisite for hearing God’s true voice.

The Idol of Self: When Your Heart Speaks, Not God

Pastor E.A. Adeboye continues his crucial teaching on spiritual discernment by focusing on the most common and deceptive source of error: prophecies that originate from the human spirit. He teaches that our own strong desires and emotions can create a powerful internal “echo chamber” that mimics God’s voice, leading to false guidance and failed prophecies.

1. The Three Sources of Prophecy

To understand the human spirit, we must see it in its proper context:

  • The Devil: A source of lies, condemnation, and deception, designed to steal, kill, and destroy.
  • The Human Spirit: A source of well-intentioned but flawed guidance based on personal desire, emotion, and wishful thinking.
  • The Holy Spirit: The only source of perfect, truthful, and authoritative prophecy that aligns with God’s will and character.

2. The Mechanism of the Human Spirit

Emotion-Driven “Revelation”:
A person can become emotionally excited or intensely desirous of a specific outcome and, in that heightened state, mistake their own inner longing for a word from God. The thought feels spiritual because of the context, but its origin is the soul, not the Spirit.

Confirmation Bias in Prayer:
This is a critical danger. When we “fix our mind on a particular result” before we pray, we predispose ourselves to hear a confirmation of that result. Our human spirit, eager to please us, provides the “go-ahead” we want to hear, and we wrongly label it as divine approval.

3. The Personal Testimony: A Prophecy from Excitement

The Airline Package:
Daddy Adeboye’s transparency is a powerful lesson. His excitement over a good business offer led him to prophesy prosperity and safety over the airline. This was not a malicious word, but it was a word from his human spirit, born of emotion rather than divine revelation. The subsequent plane crash proved its error.

The Lesson in Humility:
He contrasts what he should have done (“prayed for them and blessed them”) with what he did (“prophesied based on my emotions”). This distinction is vital. We can always pray blessings, but we must reserve prophetic declarations for when we are certain we have heard from the Holy Spirit.

How to Guard Against the Human Spirit

1. Put Your Emotions in Check:
Before seeking God for guidance, consciously lay your desires and preferences at His feet. Acknowledge your bias and ask Him to speak His will, regardless of your feelings. This is an act of surrender.

2. Invite God to Search Your Heart:
Pray Psalm 139:23-24 sincerely: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me…” Ask Him to expose any “idols” you have set up in your heart that could distort your hearing.

3. Seek Neutral, Godly Counsel:
As in the example of the young lady with suitors, if you find your heart is fixed on one outcome, involve a mature, objective believer who has no stake in the decision. Their lack of emotional attachment can help them hear the Holy Spirit more clearly on your behalf.

Warning: The Consequence of Unchecked Desire
The warning from Ezekiel 14:4 is severe. If we cling to our inner idols, God may “answer” us by giving us over to the deception of our own hearts. This is a form of judgment that leads us into error and its painful consequences, all to reveal the idolatry we refused to address.

Conclusion: Cultivating a Submitted Spirit

Pray this:
“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that my heart is deceitful. I surrender every idol, every strong desire, and every emotional preference to You. Cleanse me from the stumbling block of my own iniquity. Train my spirit to be completely submitted to Yours, so that when I seek Your counsel, I hear only Your pure voice and not the echo of my own wants. Give me the courage to obey what You say, even when it contradicts my feelings, in Jesus’ name.”

Action Steps:

  • Conduct an “Idol Audit”: In your journal, list areas where you have a strong desired outcome (relationships, career, finances). Honestly confess if any have become “idols” you’re unwilling to surrender.
  • Practice Neutral Prayer: When bringing a decision to God, preface your prayer with: “Lord, my personal desire is X, but I surrender it completely. Your will alone is what I seek. Please speak clearly.”
  • Delay Major Decisions: If you feel a strong “word” during an emotional high, wait. Test it. A genuine word from God will stand the test of time, prayer, and scriptural alignment.

Remember: A heart fully submitted to God is a heart that can clearly hear from God. The greatest safeguard against the deception of your human spirit is a ruthless commitment to obedience.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” (Jeremiah 17:9-10). Trust His search, not your own.
