TOPIC: WORD OF POWER I

MEMORISE:
When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
Matthew 8:16

READ: Mark 5:2-15
2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

OPEN HEAVENS DEVOTIONAL 31 MARCH 2026 MESSAGE

Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the word of God is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword. In today’s Bible reading, Jesus spoke a word to a man who was possessed by a legion of demons, and immediately, the demons left him.

In Acts 16:16-18, Paul did likewise. When a girl who was possessed with a spirit of divination kept following him, he commanded the demon to come out of her in the name of Jesus, and it obeyed. Your words can also carry power when they are backed up by the word of the Almighty God.

If you are a true disciple of Jesus Christ, demons will recognise who you are and be afraid of you because they know that you have the power to cast them out. In Acts 19:13-17, the seven sons of Sceva saw a demon possessed man, and they commanded the demon to leave him in the name of Jesus whom Paul preached. The demon knew that they had no relationship with Jesus, so it disobeyed and attacked them.

The devil knows that Jesus is the Light and that He has also made His children light. This is why he will obey you if you are a true disciple of Jesus Christ.

A young man once attended a meeting and returned home loaded with demons. His case was so bad that he couldn’t stand or sit; he could only lie on the floor. When he was brought to the church, I said, “I command you to kneel because I want to pray for you.” With a fiery look, he responded, “I can’t go on my knees.” I repeated my command, and he asked, “In whose name?” I replied, “In the name of Jesus.” He obeyed immediately, and I prayed for him. Then, I said, “Stand up,” and he asked again, “In whose name?” I replied, “In the name of Jesus.” He then stood up immediately. Thereafter, I told him, “Go now. You are free in the name of Jesus.” He left, and that was the end of his problem.

Beloved, if you are a child of God, your words will be backed by the power in His word. When you tell a problem to leave in the name of Jesus, it has no choice but to obey you. Be conscious of the power in God’s word, exercise your authority in it by speaking it boldly in the face of challenges and oppositions, and you will always emerge victorious.

KEY POINT

God’s word is powerful in the mouths of His children.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR

1 Samuel 28-31

Open Heavens HYMN 3: ANCIENT WORDS

OPEN HEAVENS DEVOTIONAL 31 MARCH 2026 COMMENTARY

MEMORISE: Matthew 8:16
“When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick.”

This verse shows us the power of Jesus’ words. He did not need long prayers or special ceremonies. He just spoke a word, and the demons left. The sick were healed. His words carried authority because He is the Son of God. But here is the good news: Jesus has given that same authority to you. When you speak in His name, demons must obey.

BIBLE READING: Mark 5:2-15

This is one of the most powerful stories in the Bible about deliverance:
Verse 2-5: A man with an unclean spirit lived among the tombs. No one could bind him, not even with chains. Night and day, he cried out and cut himself with stones.
Verse 6-8: When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to come out.
Verse 9: Jesus asked the demon its name. It said, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”
Verse 10-13: The demons begged Jesus not to send them out of the country. They asked to go into a herd of pigs. Jesus allowed them.
Verse 14-15: The pigs ran down a steep place into the sea and drowned. When people came to see what happened, they found the man who had been possessed sitting, clothed, and in his right mind.

One word from Jesus changed everything. Years of torment ended in a moment.

Your Words Have Power

Pastor E.A. Adeboye wants you to know that the same power that worked in Jesus works in you. When you speak in faith, using the name of Jesus, demons must obey. Sickness must leave. Problems must bow. But you must know who you are in Christ. You must speak with authority.

1. The Word of God is Alive

Hebrews 4:12 Says:

  • “The word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword.”
  • God’s word is not like other words. Other words are just sounds. God’s word carries power. It does things.
  • When God spoke, the world came into being. When Jesus spoke, demons fled. When you speak God’s word in faith, the same power is released.

Your Words Can Carry That Power:

  • When you speak what God has said, you are not just making noise. You are releasing His power into your situation.
  • If you say, “In Jesus’ name, sickness leave,” that word goes to work. It is alive. It is active. It cuts through the darkness.

2. Demons Know Who You Are

The Sons of Sceva (Acts 19:13-17):

  • These men tried to cast out a demon by saying, “We command you in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches.”
  • The demon answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know. But who are you?”
  • Then the man with the demon jumped on them and beat them. They ran away naked and wounded.
  • Why? Because they had no relationship with Jesus. They were using His name like magic, but they did not belong to Him.

The Difference:

  • The demon knew Jesus. It knew Paul. But it did not know the sons of Sceva.
  • If you are truly a child of God, demons know you. They know you belong to Jesus. They know you have authority.
  • When you speak in Jesus’ name, they must obey. Not because you are powerful, but because He is powerful and you are His.

3. A Testimony of Authority

The Young Man with Demons:

  • Pastor Adeboye shares a powerful story. A young man came to church loaded with demons. He could not sit or stand. He could only lie on the floor.
  • Daddy said, “I command you to kneel so I can pray for you.”
  • The man looked at him with fiery eyes and said, “I can’t go on my knees.”
  • Daddy repeated the command.
  • The man asked, “In whose name?”
  • Daddy replied, “In the name of Jesus.”
  • Immediately, the man knelt.
  • After prayer, Daddy said, “Stand up.”
  • The man asked again, “In whose name?”
  • Daddy said, “In the name of Jesus.”
  • The man stood up.
  • Then Daddy said, “Go now. You are free in the name of Jesus.” The man left, and that was the end of his problem.

What We Learn:

  • The demons did not want to obey. They resisted. But when the name of Jesus was spoken, they had no choice.
  • The man did not need a long deliverance service. He just needed someone who knew his authority and used it.
  • That someone can be you.

4. Your Authority in Jesus

Jesus Gave You Power:

  • Luke 10:19 says, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
  • This is not just for pastors. This is for every believer.
  • You have authority over demons, over sickness, over every work of the enemy.

Demons Must Obey:

  • When Jesus spoke, demons left. When Paul spoke, demons left.
  • When you speak in Jesus’ name, demons must leave too. It does not matter how strong they seem. The name of Jesus is stronger.

Your Relationship Matters:

  • The sons of Sceva failed because they had no relationship with Jesus. They were using His name like a tool, but they did not know Him.
  • If you know Jesus, if you belong to Him, His name works for you. You are not just saying words. You are representing the King.

How to Use Your Authority

Know Who You Are:

  • You are a child of God. You are light. You have been given authority.
  • Say it to yourself: “I am a child of the Most High God. Demons must obey me.”

Speak with Boldness:

  • Do not whisper and hope something happens. Speak clearly. Speak with confidence.
  • When the enemy attacks, say, “In the name of Jesus, I command you to leave.”

Use the Name of Jesus:

  • Your power is not in your own name. It is in His name.
  • Always say, “In the name of Jesus.” That name carries all authority in heaven and on earth.

Do Not Be Afraid:

  • The enemy may roar like a lion, but he is a defeated foe. Jesus already won.
  • When you resist the devil in faith, he must flee (James 4:7).

Keep Your Life Clean:

  • Sin gives the enemy a foothold. If you are living in sin, your authority is weakened.
  • Confess your sins quickly. Stay close to Jesus.

Warning: Do Not Play with Demons

Do Not Be Curious:

  • Some people want to talk to demons or learn about them. This is dangerous.
  • Your job is not to talk to demons. Your job is to command them to leave. That is all.

Do Not Be Afraid:

  • Fear gives the enemy power. If you are afraid, you will not speak with authority.
  • Remember: Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

Conclusion: Speak and See Victory

Pray this:
“Lord Jesus, I thank You for the authority You have given me. I thank You that Your name is above every name. Forgive me for the times I have been afraid to use my authority. Forgive me for the times I have doubted. Today I receive boldness. I declare that demons must obey me because I belong to You. When I speak in Your name, sickness must leave. Problems must bow. The enemy must flee. I will not be afraid. I will speak Your word with confidence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Things to Do:

  1. Practice Speaking with Authority: When a small problem comes—a headache, a bad mood, a difficult situation—speak to it. Say, “In Jesus’ name, I command you to leave.” See what happens.
  2. Memorize Key Verses: Write down Luke 10:19 and James 4:7. Say them out loud every day until they are in your heart.
  3. Use the Name Boldly: When you face a big challenge, do not panic. Speak the name of Jesus. Say it out loud. The enemy cannot stand against that name.
  4. Share Your Testimony: When you see victory, tell someone. Your story will encourage others and build your own faith.

Remember: The name of Jesus is authority. When you speak it as His child, heaven backs you up. Demons know who you are. They know you belong to the King. So speak boldly. Command the enemy to leave. And watch your problems bow to the name above every name.
