OPEN HEAVEN 4 SEPTEMBER 2025 TODAY DEVOTIONAL
TOPIC: BLESSED ARE THE HUNGRY
MEMORISE:
Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
Luke 6:21
READ: Acts 8:27-39:
27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
RCCG OPEN HEAVEN 4 SEPTEMBER 2025 TODAY MESSAGE
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; Psalm 63:1
The Scripture above was written by David in the wilderness of Judah. A wilderness is often characterised by a lack of food and water, and even though David might have been hungry and thirsty, he expressed a much greater desire for something more than food and water – God’s presence. No wonder God called David a man after His own heart (Acts 13:22).
In today’s Bible reading, we read about the Ethiopian eunuch who had travelled many miles to Jerusalem to worship God. However, he had many questions as he was returning to his home country. As he travelled on the dusty roads of Gaza, an angel spoke to Phillip and told him to position himself on the road the eunuch was travelling on.
As Phillip stood by the road, the Holy Spirit gave him an additional instruction to move closer to the man’s chariot. God was so interested in the eunuch that He moved everything – an angel, a man, and His Spirit – to give him the answers he desired (Acts 8:26-40). This is what happens when God sees genuine hunger for Him in the life of a fellow. He will never let the hungry go away without being filled, and He will always fill them with good things (Luke 1:53).
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Matthew 5:6
God feeds you in proportion to your hunger for Him. Psalm 42:7 says, “…deep calleth unto deep…”
When you really want to go deep in God, your hunger will attract the resources you need to go deep. A hungry and thirsty fellow is one who is desperate for food and water. In the same vein, God expects us to hunger and thirst for His power and glory. He expects us to desperately pursue Him and seek intimacy with Him.
Jesus gave a parable in Matthew 13:44-46 that the Kingdom of God is like a man who found treasure in a field and sold all that he had so he could buy that field and own the treasure. Just like that man in the parable, God wants you to be hungry for Him so you can be filled and reflect more of His glory on the earth.
REFLECTION
Are you truly hungry for God?

OPEN HEAVEN DEVOTIONAL 4 SEPTEMBER 2025 COMMENTARY
MEMORISE: Luke 6:21 (KJV)
“Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.”
This beatitude, spoken by Jesus, is a divine promise of reversal. It assures that a present state of spiritual longing and need will not last forever. God personally guarantees to satisfy those who earnestly seek Him. The “filling” is not just a temporary relief but a complete saturation of the soul’s deepest desires by God Himself.
BIBLE READING: Acts 8:27-39 (KJV)
This passage details the divine orchestration that occurs in response to a seeking heart. The Ethiopian eunuch, a high-ranking official, had traveled a great distance to worship in Jerusalem, demonstrating significant personal cost and hunger for God. Though he left with unanswered questions, his open Scripture scroll on Isaiah 53 revealed a heart actively searching for truth. God responded to this hunger by mobilizing heaven’s resources—sending an angel, directing Philip, and guiding the Holy Spirit—to ensure this seeker was found and filled.
The Nature of True Spiritual Hunger
Daddy Adeboye uses David in Psalm 63:1 to define genuine hunger. It is a thirst that surpasses even physical needs. In a barren wilderness where his body craved water, David’s soul craved God more. This is the heart cry God responds to—a desire for the Giver, not just His gifts. This prioritization of God’s presence above all else is what defined David as “a man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22). The devotional interprets that God is not looking for casual attendees of church services but for desperate seekers who value intimacy with Him above life itself.
Divine Response to Human Hunger
The story of the Ethiopian eunuch is presented as a case study in how heaven reacts to authentic seeking. The interpretation highlights several key points:
- God Initiates: The eunuch was searching, but God made the first move by commanding Philip to go to the desert road. This shows that our hunger itself is often sparked and recognized by God.
- God Orchestrates: The entire encounter was supernaturally coordinated. An angel gave the initial command, the Spirit provided specific timing (“Go near”), and the Scripture provided the content. This demonstrates that when God finds a hungry heart, He will move heaven and earth to ensure they are fed.
- God Satisfies: The result was not just an intellectual answer but a transformational encounter. The eunuch understood the gospel, believed, was baptized, and went on his way rejoicing—completely filled. This aligns with the promise in Luke 1:53 that God ” filleth the hungry with good things.”
The Principle of Proportional Filling
The devotional introduces a crucial spiritual law: “God feeds you in proportion to your hunger for Him.” This is drawn from the “deep calleth unto deep” principle of Psalm 42:7. The interpretation is that the depth of our longing attracts a corresponding depth of God’s revelation and power. A shallow, complacent faith will receive a shallow experience. But a desperate, passionate pursuit of God—a hunger that leads us to “sell all” we have, as in the parable of the hidden treasure (Matthew 13:44)—will be met with the profound riches of His glory and presence.
Hunger as the Pathway to Glory
The ultimate purpose of this hunger is not just for personal satisfaction but for transformation. We are filled so that we may “reflect more of His glory on the earth.” A hungry Christian is a dependent Christian, and a dependent Christian is a powerful Christian. The filling we receive equips us to be effective witnesses and carriers of God’s presence into a dry and thirsty world, just as Philip was sent to the eunuch.
Pray this:
“Lord God, create in me a desperate and unquenchable hunger for Your presence. Forgive me for the times I have been satisfied with spiritual snacks when You offer a feast. Like David, let my soul thirst for You above all else. Holy Spirit, draw me into the deep places of prayer and Your Word. I position myself like the Ethiopian eunuch, Scripture open and heart ready. Come and fill me until I overflow with Your joy and reflect Your glory to everyone around me, in Jesus’ name.”
Action Steps:
- Evaluate Your Appetite: Honestly assess your spiritual hunger. Do you crave God’s presence more than entertainment, comfort, or recognition?
- Create a “Wilderness” Time: Intentionally set aside a distraction-free time each day (even 15 minutes) to seek God alone, telling Him you want more of Him.
- Position Yourself: Like the eunuch, keep your “scroll” open. Have a specific Bible reading plan and ask the Holy Spirit for understanding as you read.
- Obey Promptings: Be like Philip, ready to move when the Spirit guides, whether to pray, serve, or share, knowing God is orchestrating divine appointments for hungry hearts.
Remember: Spiritual hunger is the only appetite where being filled only increases the desire for more. God is not offended by your desperation; He is attracted to it. Your hunger is the catalyst for a divine encounter that will not only satisfy your soul but also propel you into your destiny as a carrier of His glory.
