TOPIC: FIRE CARRIERS I

MEMORISE
But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.
2 Kings 3:11

READ: 2 Kings 2:1-14
1 And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
2 And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.
3 And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
4 And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho.
5 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.

6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the Lord hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.
7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.

11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

RCCG OPEN HEAVEN 6 APRIL 2026 TODAY MESSAGE

When a piece of wood is set on fire, it burns.

Similarly, a fellow who has given his or her life to Jesus Christ can burn for Him, and the fire that burns in such a believer is the power of the Holy Spirit.

There are two ways by which a believer can catch fire: directly from God, just like Moses and Elijah, or through other people who have caught the fire of God and have become fire carriers.

For example, Joshua received his fire from Moses (Deuteronomy. 34:2), and Elisha received his from Elijah (1 Kings 19:19). Joshua was called Moses’ servant (Joshua 11), and wherever Moses went, he was there to serve him. While Joshua served Moses faithfully, the latter laid his hands on him, and he received the spirit of wisdom. If you feel like you are too important to serve those whom God has placed over you, it means that you are not ready to carry the fire of God.

Serving Moses could not have been easy, but Joshua willingly paid the price. In Exodus 24:13-18, the Bible says that he went with Moses to Mount Sinai, where they stayed for 40 days and nights. He served Moses wholeheartedly, and when Moses laid his hands upon him, he transferred all the honour and grace he had to him (Numbers 27:18-23). This is why, as a child of God, you must honour those whom God has placed over you.

Elisha was another person who received God’s fire through honour and service. People knew him as the man who poured water on Elijah’s hands (2 Kings 3:11). Despite his wealthy background, he was willing to stoop very low to honour and serve God’s prophet, Elijah. While the other sons of the prophets were busy predicting what would happen to Elijah (2 Kings 2:3), Elisha was busy following the man of God and serving him. Eventually, he received a double portion of the anointing that was upon Elijah.

Beloved, if you want to be a carrier of the fire of God, you must serve Him wholeheartedly and be willing to also serve and honour the anointed people He has placed over your life. I pray for you today: may you never become too proud to honour and serve those whom God has placed over your life. In the name above every other name, you will carry the fire of God upon your life and do mighty exploits in His kingdom.

KEY POINT:

Serving and honouring the people whom God has placed over you is a channel through which you can receive His fire.

OPEN HEAVEN DEVOTIONAL 6 APRIL 2026 COMMENTARY

MEMORISE: 2 Kings 3:11

“And he said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.”
This verse is remarkable because it identifies Elisha not by his wealthy family background, not by his education, not by his prophetic title—but by his service. He was known as the one who poured water on Elijah’s hands. His identity was wrapped up in his humility and dedication to serving the man of God.

BIBLE READING: 2 Kings 2:1-14

This passage records the dramatic transition of prophetic power from Elijah to Elisha. Elijah was about to be taken up to heaven, and he visited several locations—Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, and finally the Jordan River. At every stop, the sons of the prophets came out to tell Elisha that his master would be taken that day. Three times they told him, and three times Elisha replied, “I know it; hold ye your peace.” He was not distracted by their words or by the impending loss. He simply stuck to Elijah and refused to leave his side. When they crossed the Jordan on dry ground, Elijah asked what he could do for Elisha. Elisha asked for a double portion of his spirit. The condition was severe: “If thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so.” Elisha watched, and the mantle fell. This passage teaches us that the fire of God is transferred to those who refuse to be distracted and who honour God’s servants to the end.

How to Catch the Fire of God

In today’s devotional, Pastor E.A. Adeboye addresses a deep spiritual question: how do believers become carriers of God’s fire? How do we move from ordinary Christianity to a life that burns with the power of the Holy Spirit? The answer is surprising – it comes through humility, service, and honouring those God has placed over us.

Fire Must Be Transferred

The devotional explains that there are two ways to catch spiritual fire:

  1. Directly from God – like Moses at the burning bush or Elijah calling down fire from heaven
  2. Through fire carriers – those who already carry God’s presence and can transfer it to others

Most of us would love the first option. We want a dramatic, direct encounter with God that sets us ablaze. But the Bible shows us that God often works through the second method. He uses people. He transfers anointing through relationship, dedication and humble service.

And that is where the problem lies. Many believers want the fire without the process. They want the power without the price. They want the anointing without the servanthood.

Two Examples of Men Who Paid the Price

Daddy Adeboye gives us two powerful examples of men who received God’s fire through honour and service:

Joshua and Moses: Joshua is introduced to us as Moses’ servant. He went wherever Moses went. When Moses went up to Mount Sinai for forty days and nights, Joshua went with him. He didn’t stay at the bottom of the mountain with everyone else—he followed Moses into the cloud of glory. He served faithfully, without complaint, without competing for position. And when the time came, Moses laid his hands on Joshua, and he was filled with the spirit of wisdom. The servant became the leader.

Elisha and Elijah: Elisha came from a wealthy family. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen when Elijah called him—a sign of significant wealth. He could have easily said, “I am too important to be anyone’s assistant.” But instead, he became known as the one who poured water on Elijah’s hands. That was a servant’s job. While the other prophets stood around predicting what would happen, Elisha stayed close to Elijah, serving him, learning from him, refusing to be distracted. His reward? A double portion of the anointing.

The Price of Pride

The devotional issues a strong warning: if you feel too important to serve those God has placed over you, you are not ready to carry His fire.

Pride blocks the transfer of anointing. When you think you know more than your pastor, when you criticize rather than serve, when you compare yourself to others rather than learning from those ahead of you—you shut the door to the very fire you claim to want.

Joshua and Elisha could have been prideful. They could have said, “I have my own direct connection to God.” But they understood something crucial: God’s fire often flows through God’s appointed channels. Honour opens the door. Service positions you to receive.

What Does This Mean for You Today?

You may be asking, “How do I apply this in my life?” Here are practical lessons from today’s message:

  1. Identify Your Elijah: Who has God placed over you spiritually? Your pastor, your mentor, your spiritual parents? Honour them. Don’t just tolerate them—genuinely honour them as God’s representatives in your life.
  2. Serve Without Complaining: Joshua served Moses. Elisha poured water on Elijah’s hands. Neither job was glamorous. But service positions you for transfer. Look for ways to serve in your church, in your ministry, in your spiritual family. Don’t serve for recognition—serve because it prepares your heart to receive.
  3. Stay Close When Others Drift: When Elijah was about to be taken, the sons of the prophets stood at a distance and talked. Elisha stayed close and walked. There is a difference between being a spectator and being a disciple. Spectators watch from afar and discuss. Disciples stay close and receive.
  4. Refuse Distractions: Three times Elisha was told his master would leave him. Three times he refused to be distracted. He kept his eyes on Elijah until the mantle fell. Don’t let the opinions of others, the fear of loss, or the temptation of comparison pull you away from those God has placed in your life.
  5. Understand the Reward: Joshua received the spirit of wisdom and led Israel into the Promised Land. Elisha received a double portion and performed twice as many miracles as Elijah. The reward for honour and service is not small. It is generational impact and multiplied power.

Conclusion: The Mantle is Waiting

Somewhere, there is a mantle with your name on it. There is a level of God’s fire and power that He wants to release into your life. But it may come through someone He has placed ahead of you.

Don’t let pride rob you. Don’t let distraction steal your destiny. Don’t let the fear of serving keep you from receiving. Humble yourself. Honour those God has sent. Serve with all your heart. And when the mantle falls, you will be ready to carry it.

Pray this:
“Father, forgive me for any pride or independence that has kept me from honouring those You have placed over me. Give me a servant’s heart like Joshua and Elisha. Help me to serve faithfully, to stay close, and to refuse distractions. I want to carry Your fire. Position me for the transfer of Your anointing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Action Steps:

  • This week, find a practical way to serve your pastor or spiritual mentor. It could be helping with a task, sending an encouraging note, or simply asking, “How can I help?”
  • Examine your heart: Is there any pride or resentment toward spiritual authority? Confess it and ask God to give you a humble spirit.
  • Commit to staying close: If you have been drifting from your spiritual covering, make a decision to reconnect and remain faithful.
  • Study the lives of Joshua and Elisha: Read their stories and ask God to teach you the secrets of their success.
