RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS MANUAL LESSON 31 (5 April 2026)

TOPIC: SOCIAL ETIQUETTE

OPENING PRAYER:
Father, help to be decent and do things properly in every given situation.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:
The teacher should review the lesson for the previous week.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Titus 3:1-2

1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

INTRODUCTION

Etiquette, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is defined as a code (specific rules) of polite behaviour within a culture, society or professional group.

Etiquette makes one behave in a responsible way distinct from animals. It applies to various fields of life: social, professional, business, spiritual, etc. When an individual displays respect for rules of behaviour, we say that person has good etiquette or manners. The Bible equally advises us as believers to apply decency and orderliness in whatever we do (1 Corinthians 14:40).

Hence, believers must be guided in their dealings and interactions with others.

TEACHER’S DIARY

LESSON AIM:

To educate the church on the importance of social etiquette and how to apply it in various aspects of life.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

Through this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Understand the place of etiquette in maintaining order and decency in society.
  • Know the impact of good manners and polite behaviour in personal and professional relationships.
  • Identify the practical examples of social etiquette that can be applied in everyday interactions.
  • Conduct themselves in a manner that reflects their faith and respect for others.

TEACHING PLAN:

To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:

  • Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion, and do class activities and assignments.
  • Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, and mark attendance and assignment.
  • Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give assignments.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: THE NEED FOR ETIQUETTE

1. People around us must not feel embarrassed by our behaviour (Colossians 4:6).

2. We must avoid irrational conduct (Titus 3:1-2)-

3. Without etiquette, members of society would show far too much impatience and disrespect for one another (1 Peter 3:8)

4. Etiquette makes us cultured people who leave our marks wherever we go (1 Peter 2:9).

5. It teaches us mannerisms: the way to eat, talk, walk and most importantly behave in society (Proverbs 23:1-2).

6. It is essential for a lasting first impression (Philippians 4:5a).

7. The way we interact with our superiors, parents, tel-low workers, friends, etc. speaks a lot about our personality and upbringing (Proverbs 18:24).

8. Etiquette enables individuals to earn respect and appreciation in society (Luke 6:31)

9. Etiquette helps us to value relationships (Proverbs 25:17)

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Discuss why you need to do things decently and properly.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: SOCIAL ETIQUETTE

1. When invited to a social gathering, do not be in a haste to take the front seat until your host brings you up (Proverbs 25:6-L; Luke 14:7-11)

2. Do not call someone more than twice continuously on the phone. If they do not pick up your call, presume they have something important to attend to (Matthew 7:1)

3. Return money or anything that you have borrowed even before the other person remembers to ask for it. It shows your integrity and character (Psalm 37:21).

4. Always be modest. Be careful not to order the expensive dish on the menu when someone is giving you lunch/dinner. Do not use the opportunity to take undue advantage of your host. Also, avoid taking friends along except on request (Proverbs 23:1-2)

5. If you take a taxi with a friend and he/she pays, try to pay the next time (Hebrews 10:24)

6. Never comment negatively on someone’s weight in public (Psalm 139:14)

7. For men, always be “a gentleman.” Rudeness is never manly (Titus 3:2). For ladies, avoid sitting carelessly. It is advisable to cross your legs at the ankle.

8. When someone shows you a photo on their phone, do not swipe left or right, you never know what is next.

9. If a colleague tells you they have a doctor’s appointment, do not ask what for, just say “Hope you’re okay?” Do not put them in the uncomfortable position of having to say what they do not want to say.

10. Do not be a busybody in other people’s matters (1 Timothy 5:13; 1 Peter 4:15).

In addition, you should not rush for food or chairs in a large gathering. Do not jump queues, drive against traffic or break traffic laws. Avoid littering the environment with waste. Do not use reckless slang (“shit,” “fuck” etc.). Flagrant disregard for decorum, lack of table manners and improper dressing should be avoided.
