OPEN HEAVEN 4 JANUARY 2026 TODAY DEVOTIONAL

TOPIC: Yield To His Spirit

MEMORISE:
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. – Genesis 1:2 (KJV)

READ: Romans 8:6-16

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

RCCG OPEN HEAVEN 4 JANUARY 2026 TODAY MESSAGE

One of the things that happened in Genesis 1 was that God changed confusion to clarity. The Bible says that the earth was without form; however, after the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, beauty and order came out of the formless earth.

Before God appeared in Genesis 1:2, the earth was dark and empty. Emptiness is not a good thing. If a student is said to be ’empty-headed’, for example, it implies that no matter how hard the student studies, he or she won’t be successful academically. After the Spirit of God intervened in Genesis 1:2, however, emptiness gave way to fullness. You will discover that God called everything that followed immediately after that intervention ‘good’.

When the supernatural collides with the natural, the natural must give way. For example, in Judges 14:5-6, the Lion of the tribe of Judah easily overcame the physical lion that roared at Samson because the Spirit of God was upon him. Believe me, you cannot achieve anything meaningful this year with your natural abilities alone (John 15:5). However, if you yield to the Holy Spirit, you will have outstanding success in all areas of your life.

When you yield to the Spirit of God, He overshadows you. This means that He will be in control of your words, thoughts, and actions. When this happens, you will experience a supernatural change in your life, and you will come into a realm of endless possibilities.

Beloved, yield completely to the leading of the Holy Spirit this year. Spend quality time praying in the Holy Spirit daily and rely on His leading in all you do (Romans 8:14). If, however, you have not surrendered your life to Christ, you must do so before you can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Confess your sins, promise God you will not return to them, and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. After you’ve done this, ask God to baptise you in the Holy Spirit and seek a genuine minister of God to pray with you so you can receive His baptism with the evidence of speaking in tongues. You must also fast regularly if you want to subject your flesh to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Lastly, you must study the Bible diligently every day and obey all of God’s instructions. If you do all these, the Spirit of God will move mightily in your life, and everything that has been termed impossible will become possible.

PRAYER POINT:

Father, please overshadow me with Your precious Holy Spirit and make impossibilities become possible in my life, in Jesus’ name.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR

Genesis 13-17

HYMN 18: Praise To The Lord The Almighty, The King Of Creation

OPEN HEAVEN DEVOTIONAL 4 JANUARY 2026 COMMENTARY

MEMORISE: Genesis 1:2
“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
This verse captures the state of primal chaos and emptiness. Yet, it holds the key to transformation: the moving of the Spirit of God. It establishes that before any creative command was spoken, the Spirit was present and active, preparing chaos for order.

BIBLE READING: Romans 8:6-16
This passage contrasts the mindset of the flesh (leading to death and confusion) with the mindset of the Spirit (leading to life, peace, and sonship). It defines the yielded life as one led by the Spirit of God, who empowers us and bears witness that we are children of God.

The Move of the Spirit: From Chaos to Creation

Daddy Adeboye directs us to the original template for personal transformation. Just as the Spirit brooded over the formless earth, He desires to move upon the areas of our lives that are chaotic, empty, or dark. The devotional makes it clear: your natural abilities are insufficient for a supernatural year; you require the intervention of the Holy Spirit.

1. Diagnosing the “Without Form and Void”

The State of Confusion and Emptiness:
“Without form” speaks of confusion, lack of direction, and undefined purpose. “Void” speaks of emptiness, lack of fulfillment, and fruitlessness. This can manifest in a career, relationship, spiritual life, or mental state. It is the raw material of frustration.

The Limitation of the Natural:
An “empty-headed” student, as illustrated, represents the ultimate limitation of natural effort alone. You can strive, but without the Spirit’s illumination and empowerment, core transformation and lasting success remain out of reach (John 15:5). The flesh cannot fix what the flesh has caused.

2. The Catalyst: The Spirit’s Movement

The Supernatural Collision:
When the supernatural (the Spirit of God) collides with the natural (your situation), the natural must give way. The example of Samson (Judges 14:5-6) is potent: the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and a physical lion was rendered powerless. Your “roaring lion” of a problem is subject to the same law when the Spirit moves.

From Intervention to “Good”:
Notice the sequence: Spirit moves, then God speaks, then creation responds, and God calls it “good.” The Spirit’s movement is the necessary prerequisite for God’s creative word to find fertile ground in your life. What He later calls “good” starts with the Spirit’s overshadowing.

3. The Yielded Life: Overshadowed and Controlled

The Meaning of Yieldedness:
To yield is to surrender the right-of-way. It is a conscious decision to let the Holy Spirit be in control of your words, thoughts, and actions (Romans 8:5-6). This isn’t a loss of personality, but the alignment of your will with God’s perfect will, releasing you into a realm of “endless possibilities.”

The Evidence of Overshadowing:
When the Spirit overshadows you, your life begins to bear supernatural fruit—peace where there was anxiety, clarity where there was confusion, wisdom where there was foolishness, and power where there was weakness. You operate from a place of divine initiative, not human reaction.

4. The Pathway to Empowerment and Impossibilities Made Possible

The Foundational Step: Salvation:
Daddy Adeboye is clear: the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ. You cannot host the Spirit without first surrendering to the Lordship of Jesus. This is non-negotiable: confess, repent, accept.

The Essential Practices:

  1. Praying in the Spirit: This builds you up and prays perfectly according to God’s will (Jude 1:20, Romans 8:26-27).
  2. Fasting Regularly: This disciplines the flesh and sharpens spiritual sensitivity (Matthew 17:21).
  3. Diligent Bible Study: The Spirit speaks through the Word. This is how you learn His language and instructions.
  4. Obedience: Prompt, complete obedience to God’s instructions is the proof of yieldedness.

Warning: Striving in the Natural Leads to Emptiness

Attempting to navigate a spiritual year with only natural tools—human wisdom, sheer willpower, worldly strategies—guarantees a continuation of the “without form and void” state. It is an exercise in frustration.

Conclusion: Invite the Brooding Spirit

Pray this:
“Holy Spirit, You who moved upon the face of the deep, I invite You to move upon the chaotic and empty areas of my life. I yield completely to Your leading. Overshadow my mind, my words, and my actions. Baptize me afresh in Your power. Where there is confusion, bring divine order. Where there is emptiness, bring divine fullness. I rely not on my strength but on Your mighty moving. Make every impossibility in my life bow to the name of Jesus, as I am led by You!”

Action Steps:

  1. Identify Your “Deep”: Name one area of life that feels “without form and void.” Present it specifically to God in prayer.
  2. Daily Yielding Prayer: Each morning, before anything else, pray: “Holy Spirit, I yield my will, schedule, and decisions to You today. Lead me, guide me, overshadow me.”
  3. Commit to a Discipline: Choose one of the essential practices (e.g., 15 mins of praying in the Spirit daily, a weekly fast, a structured Bible reading plan) and commit to it for the next 30 days.
  4. Obey the Last Prompt: Act immediately on the last clear instruction God gave you. This opens the channel for more.

Remember: The same Spirit that hovered over chaos to prepare for creation is ready to hover over your life. Your transformation from confusion to clarity, from emptiness to fullness, begins with His move.
“And the Spirit of God moved…” (Genesis 1:2). Let Him move in you.
