OPEN HEAVEN 5 NOVEMBER 2025 TODAY DEVOTIONAL
TOPIC: HEARING FROM GOD II
MEMORISE:
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
John 10:27
READ: John 10:1-16:
1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.
7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.
14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
RCCG OPEN HEAVEN 5 NOVEMBER 2025 TODAY MESSAGE
Today’s memory verse tells us that anyone who is a sheep in God’s pasture should hear His voice frequently. When you hear from God, He will guide you in all your ways.
Years ago, during a meeting, some ministers of God had a disagreement on who to vote for between the two major presidential candidates in Nigeria. I was also in the meeting, and I said, “Brethren, has God told you that either of them will be president? Did He tell you if there will even be an election and if the result will be allowed to stand? Has He told you which of the two He wants?”
I told them, “As for me, He hasn’t told me yet. I’ve been asking Him who will be president, but He hasn’t answered, which means I have probably been asking the wrong question. I’m going to change my question to Will there be an election, and will the result be accepted?”
Shortly after that meeting, we were having a pastors conference in RCCG, and I told those present that God finally answered me concerning the elections. He said that one of the candidates would win but would not be allowed to rule, and this was exactly what happened. Asking God about situations and waiting on Him to speak will help a Christian to live above confusion.
One morning, I asked God which route to take to work to avoid being held up in traffic. He said, “You are not leaving the house today.” I began to quote the Bible to the One who wrote it, “Lord, You said that he who will not work should not eat. Your word also says, ‘Seest thou a man diligent in his business, he shall stand before kings and not mean men!’ He insisted, so I said, “Okay. If they fire me, I’m sure You will provide another job.”
At that time, I had not listened to the radio, so I didn’t know that a military coup had happened. A short while later, there was chaos in a school in front of my house as parents rushed to pick up their children. That was when I put on my radio and heard what had happened. God’s voice shielded me from the pandemonium that broke out on the streets.
Beloved, train your spirit to hear God’s voice by spending time in His presence studying His word, worshipping, and waiting on Him. His voice will instruct you in the way you should go and protect you from evil.
PRAYER POINT
Father, please open my ears to hear You clearly always.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
John 9-10
HYMN 30: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
OPEN HEAVEN DEVOTIONAL 5 NOVEMBER 2025 COMMENTARY
MEMORISE: John 10:27 (KJV)
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
This verse establishes both a defining characteristic and a sacred responsibility of every believer. To be a true sheep of Christ’s flock is to be attuned to the Shepherd’s voice. This hearing is not a rare gift for a select few but the birthright of all who belong to Him, leading to intimate knowledge and guided obedience.
BIBLE READING: John 10:1-16
This passage is Jesus’s foundational teaching on His role as the Good Shepherd:
- v. 1-5: The sheep recognize and follow the voice of their true shepherd, fleeing from the voice of strangers. This signifies discernment born of relationship.
- v. 7-10: Jesus is the door of the sheep; those who enter through Him find salvation and pasture. His voice leads to life and provision.
- v. 11-16: As the Good Shepherd, He lays down His life for the sheep. This sacrificial love is the context in which His voice is spoken and trusted.
The Shepherd’s Voice: Your Guide and Shield in a Confusing World
Pastor E.A. Adeboye moves from the atmosphere of hearing God to the practice of it. Using powerful personal testimonies, he demonstrates that hearing God’s voice is not an abstract concept but a practical, life-saving, and confusion-dispelling reality for every believer. It is the essential tool for navigation and protection in an uncertain world.
1. The Identity of a True Sheep
Hearing is the Evidence:
The foundational truth from John 10:27 is that hearing God’s voice is the primary identifier of being one of His sheep. It is not a sign of elite spirituality but of genuine salvation. A believer who never hears from God should examine the state of their relationship with the Shepherd.
Intimacy Precedes Instruction:
The verse links “hear my voice” with “I know them.” This is not mere intellectual knowledge but intimate, relational knowledge. God speaks to those He is in relationship with. The depth of what we hear is often connected to the depth of our fellowship with Him.
2. The Practice of Divine Inquiry
Asking the Right Questions:
Daddy Adeboye’s testimony about the election is a masterclass in learning to inquire of God. It shows that sometimes God’s silence is not a refusal to answer, but an invitation to refine our questions. Spiritual maturity involves being led by the Holy Spirit even in how we pray and what we ask.
Living Above Confusion:
In a world filled with conflicting voices, opinions, and prophecies, the only sure anchor is a personal word from God. When we learn to wait for His specific directive, we are lifted above the fray of public debate and human analysis into the peace of divine certainty.
3. The Life-Saving Power of Obedience
Obedience Over Human Logic:
The testimony of the coup is perhaps the most powerful point. God’s instruction (“You are not leaving the house today”) directly contradicted human wisdom and even scriptural principles about diligence. This teaches that a specific, present-word command from God can temporarily supersede a general biblical principle for our protection.
The Shield of His Voice:
God’s primary purpose in speaking is often to guide and protect His people. His voice is a shield (Proverbs 30:5). What we perceive as an inconvenience or a strange command may be God’s strategy to hide us from chaos, danger, or calamity that we know nothing about.
How to Train Your Spirit to Hear God
1. Cultivate a Daily Posture of Listening:
Move beyond monologue prayers. Dedicate time in your quiet moments to simply be still and listen. Ask, “Lord, what are you saying to me today?” and wait expectantly for impressions, scriptures, or thoughts that align with His character.
2. Saturate Yourself with the Written Word (The Logos):
The primary way God speaks is through His Bible. The more you know the written Word (Logos), the more easily you will recognize the tone, character, and content of His spoken word (Rhema). His voice will never contradict His Scripture.
3. Practice Immediate, Simple Obedience:
Start by obeying the small, simple promptings: to call someone, to give an encouragement, to turn left instead of right. As you prove faithful in small things, God will trust you with greater revelations and assignments (Luke 16:10).
Warning: The Peril of a Deaf Spirit
A life that does not practice hearing from God is vulnerable to every wind of doctrine, public opinion, and demonic deception. It is a life forced to rely on human understanding, which is severely limited and often leads to unnecessary trouble and confusion.
Conclusion: Your Lifeline to Safety and Direction
Pray this:
“Good Shepherd, I thank You that I am Your sheep. Train my ears to be sensitive to Your voice above all the noise of this world. Give me the humility to ask the right questions and the courage to obey even when Your instruction defies human logic. Let Your voice be my daily guide, my shield from evil, and my source of perfect peace, in Jesus’ name.”
Action Steps:
- Start a ‘God Said’ Journal: Begin recording the specific instructions, promises, and scriptures you believe God is speaking to you. Review it regularly to build your faith and track His faithfulness.
- Obedience Check: Is there a simple, recent prompting from the Holy Spirit that you have yet to obey? Do it today. This act of obedience will sharpen your spiritual hearing.
- Study the Shepherds: Read John 10 and Psalm 23 meditatively. Ask the Holy Spirit to make the reality of Jesus as your Shepherd a tangible experience in your life.
Remember: Your ability to hear and obey the Shepherd’s voice is your greatest asset in the Christian life. It is your guidance system, your protection plan, and your key to a life free from the world’s confusion.
“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21). This is your inheritance in Christ.
