Careless words can drain a Christian’s spiritual battery. When a believer keeps speaking words that are contrary to God’s will for his or her life, such a believer will end up deflating himself or herself spiritually. When your heart is filled with God’s word, and your words agree with His word, you will remain strong in faith and vibrant in the Spirit.
Psalm 107:2 says,
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
Do you know why the redeemed of the Lord must ‘say so’? It is because there is power in what we say. If you are the redeemed of the Lord and you keep speaking the words of the unredeemed, you will reap the fruits of the things you say.
When a believer whose speech should be gracious and seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6) keeps speaking negative and careless words, it is only a matter of time before his or her life starts to look like the negative words that have been spoken.
When things don’t go your way or when the economy looks unfavourable, do not forget that you are the redeemed of the Lord, and as a result, you are programmed for victory. Hence, you should not re-program yourself for failure and defeat through your words.
Fill your heart with the words of God so that His words will continually be on your lips no matter the things or situations that come your way, for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45).
If you, however, occupy your mind with wrong or negative words, those words will come to play when the storms of life arise. You can’t be bold enough to say that the Lord is your helper when you have not heard and believed that God will never leave you nor forsake you. What you keep hearing is what builds confidence or fear in you.
In any circumstance you find yourself, check what God’s word says concerning it; hold on to the word and speak it into the situation. Ensure that the words on your lips align with what God has said in His word, but to do this, you must fill your heart with His word. You must ensure that the words of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom (Colossians 3:16). When God’s word fills your heart, your words will be wholesome and full of grace, and your life will truly reflect His glory.
KEY POINT
Words have the power to create or destroy. Be careful what you say

HYMN 3: ANCIENT WORDS
OPEN HEAVEN DEVOTIONAL 9 OCTOBER 2025 COMMENTARY
MEMORISE: Proverbs 18:21
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
This verse establishes the immense creative power God has vested in human speech. Our words are not merely sounds; they are containers of spiritual force that will ultimately produce a harvest—either of life or death—in our own lives.
BIBLE READING: Hebrews 13:5-6
This passage provides the foundation for faith-filled speech:
v. 5b: The Promise: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
v. 6: The Proclamation: “So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”
God’s promise is designed to fuel our bold confession.
The Power of Your Proclamation
Pastor E.A. Adeboye delivers a crucial teaching on the spiritual dynamics of speech. For the believer, words are not neutral; they are either faith-filled conduits of God’s power or careless drains of spiritual energy. Your mouth is a creative instrument that programs your destiny.
The Two Realms of Speech
- The Language of the Redeemed (Life):
This is speech that agrees with God’s Word and His nature. It is gracious, seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6), and full of faith. It is not denial of reality, but a declaration of a higher truth—God’s reality.- Function: It builds up, encourages, and calls forth God’s will (Ephesians 4:29).
- Source: A heart filled with the Word of God (Luke 6:45).
- Result: It sustains faith, invites God’s power, and programs the speaker for victory.
- The Language of the Unredeemed (Death):
This is speech that agrees with circumstances, fears, and negative reports. It is careless, negative, and contrary to God’s will.- Function: It drains spiritual energy, inflames fear, and calls forth defeat.
- Source: A heart occupied with the cares of the world and negative input.
- Result: It deflates faith, empowers the enemy, and programs the speaker for failure.
The Mechanism of Creative Speech
- Hearing -> Faith -> Confession -> Reality (Romans 10:17):
Faith is built by hearing God’s Word. This faith then finds expression in our confession, which in turn shapes our reality. To change your confession, you must first change what you are hearing and believing. - The Heart as the Reservoir (Luke 6:45):
The mouth merely overflows with whatever has been stored in the heart. A heart filled with God’s promises will naturally speak words of life. A heart filled with news, gossip, and fear will speak words of death. - The Principle of “Say So” (Psalm 107:2):
Redemption is a finished work, but its benefits are accessed through proclamation. God instructs the redeemed to “say so” because verbal agreement with His truth releases its power into our circumstances.
How to Harness the Power of Your Tongue
1. Audit Your Speech:
Consciously listen to what you say about your health, finances, family, and future. Eliminate phrases like “I’m always broke,” “This will never change,” or “I’m so sick and tired.”
2. Saturate Your Heart with God’s Word:
You cannot speak what you do not know. Prioritize daily meditation on Scripture (Joshua 1:8). Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16).
3. Boldly Align Your Confession with God’s Promise:
Follow the Hebrews 13:5-6 model. When God says, “I will never leave you,” your response must be, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear.” Speak to your situation based on what God has said, not what you see.
4. Guard Your Ears:
What you listen to will eventually come out of your mouth. Limit exposure to negative news, faithless conversations, and fear-based media.
Warning: The Careless Word
Careless words are like holes in a spiritual battery; they drain your faith and render you powerless in the day of adversity. A believer who constantly speaks defeat cannot walk in victory, because they are consistently contradicting and nullifying the work of Christ on their behalf.
Conclusion: Program Yourself for Victory
Pray this:
“Heavenly Father, I thank You for the power of life and death in my tongue. Forgive me for every careless word I have spoken that has drained my faith and dishonored You. Today, I take control of my speech. I saturate my heart with Your Word so that my mouth will overflow with life, grace, and faith. I declare that [insert a specific promise from God’s Word] over my life. My mouth is programmed for victory, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
Action Steps:
- Scripture Cards: Write down 3-5 key promises from God’s Word and carry them with you. Speak them aloud throughout the day.
- Fast from Negativity: For the next 24 hours, commit to speaking only positive, faith-filled words that align with Scripture.
- Find a Confession Partner: Partner with a believer to hold each other accountable for speaking life.
- Respond, Don’t React: When faced with bad news, train yourself to pause and respond with God’s Word instead of reacting with fear.
Remember: You are the redeemed of the Lord. SAY SO. Your words are shaping your world. Choose them wisely.
