OPEN HEAVEN 21 NOVEMBER 2025 TODAY DEVOTIONAL

TOPIC: WHAT DO YOU WANT?

MEMORISE:
Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
Hebrews 12:16

READ: Genesis 25:29-34:
29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

RCCG OPEN HEAVEN 21 NOVEMBER 2025 TODAY MESSAGE

One day in 1986, I was having a nice time in fellowship with God when He asked, “Son, what do you want for your birthday?” Ordinarily, I pay little attention to birthdays because, to me, the real birthday is the date a fellow becomes born again.

However, the day you were born is also important because Psalm 90:12 says,
“…teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

| replied, “I want every church member to receive a miracle.” Then He said, “Call them together and let them meet with Me for one week. At the end of the week, all of them would have gotten a miracle.”

That one week in 1986 is one we can never forget in RCCG because God’s power was so mighty in our midst that we experienced many jaw-dropping miracles which have been happening more frequently to date.

God is always asking you for what you want.

Even if He does not ask you directly as He did with me, He can ask you by presenting two options before you, and your choice can determine the rest of your life. When God asks you for what you want, you will ask for material things that will fade quickly if your mind has always been on material things.

In today’s Bible reading, Esau did not know that God was indirectly testing him when he returned from his hunt hungry. When Jacob asked him to sell his birthright for a plate of food, he did not consider the choices before him; all he wanted was to fill his belly with food. Esau had enough energy to ask Jacob for food, and this implies that he really wasn’t at the point of death, so if he had refused Jacob’s offer, he would not have died.

However, he accepted Jacob’s offer and despised his birthright because his mind was focused on material things. In today’s memory verse, he was called a fornicator and a profane person because he chose a material thing over something eternal.

Beloved, you will be faced with choices every day, and the choices you make today will determine the quality of your life tomorrow.

What choices are you making today? If God gives you a blank cheque to ask for what you want, what will you ask for? Will you ask for things that fade away, like Esau, or things that are beneficial to fulfilling your glorious destiny in God? I pray that God will give you the wisdom to make the right decisions, in Jesus’ name.

REFLECTION

Are you making the right choices in your life?

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR

Acts 22-23

HYMN 33: GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH!

OPEN HEAVEN DEVOTIONAL 21 NOVEMBER 2025 COMMENTARY

MEMORISE: Hebrews 12:16 (KJV)
“Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.”
This verse provides God’s own assessment of Esau’s character: “profane.” A profane person treats something sacred as if it were common. Esau treated his divine inheritance with contempt, exchanging eternal spiritual value for temporary physical satisfaction, an act the Bible equates to sexual immorality in its reckless disregard for covenant.

BIBLE READING: Genesis 25:29-34
This passage is the tragic account of a destiny traded for a moment of comfort:

  • v. 29-30: Esau returns from the field, exhausted and dominated by his immediate physical need. His demand is impulsive: “Feed me… with that same red pottage.”
  • v. 31-33: Jacob, recognizing the opportunity, sets the price: the birthright. In a moment of profound spiritual blindness, Esau devalues his inheritance, reasoning, “Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?”
  • v. 34: The climax of the transaction: Esau ate, drank, rose, and went his way. The verse concludes with the devastating summary: “Thus Esau despised his birthright.”

The Blank Cheque of God: What Will You Ask For?

Pastor E.A. Adeboye presents a powerful contrast between two responses to a divine offer. Using his own testimony and the biblical story of Esau, he teaches that God often presents us with choices that serve as tests, revealing the true orientation of our hearts and determining the trajectory of our destinies.

1. The Divine Invitation: God Asks What You Want

Direct and Indirect Encounters:
Daddy Adeboye’s 1986 birthday encounter shows that God can speak directly and personally, offering a “blank cheque.” However, for most believers, the question is presented indirectly through the daily choices we face. Every decision between indulgence and discipline, selfishness and service, or the temporal and the eternal is a form of this divine inquiry.

The Heart’s Answer Reveals Its Treasure:
Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21). The converse is also true: what your heart consistently desires reveals what you treasure. When presented with a choice, your automatic preference exposes whether your treasure is in heaven or on earth.

2. The Two Archetypes: Adeboye vs. Esau

The Spiritual Mindset (Adeboye’s Response):
When God asked Daddy Adeboye what he wanted, his heart was for the people of God. He asked for corporate blessing: “I want every church member to receive a miracle.” This selfless, kingdom-oriented request unlocked a season of unprecedented, jaw-dropping miracles that reverberates to this day. He asked for a legacy of power, not a personal possession.

The Carnal Mindset (Esau’s Response):
Esau was presented with a choice between an eternal spiritual inheritance (the birthright) and immediate physical satisfaction (the stew). His fleshly appetite dictated his decision. He justified his choice with the dramatic exaggeration, “I am at the point to die,” showing how desire distorts reality. He sold his future for a meal.

3. The Eternal Consequences of Temporal Choices

Esau’s Profane Character:
The Bible labels Esau “profane” not for a sexual sin, but for his valuation system. He treated the sacred blessing of the Abrahamic covenant—which included the promise of the Messiah—as no more valuable than a bowl of soup. This is the essence of profanity in God’s eyes.

Your Choices Today Frame Your Tomorrow:
The devotional emphasizes a universal law: “the choices you make today will determine the quality of your life tomorrow.” Esau’s single meal led to a lifetime of loss, bitterness, and the forfeiture of his father’s blessing (Genesis 27). A moment of impulsiveness can define a destiny.

How to Cultivate a Destiny-Oriented Heart

1. Number Your Days for Wisdom:
As Psalm 90:12 instructs, live with an eternal perspective. Recognize that life is short and every day is a stewardship. This awareness helps you weigh momentary pleasures against eternal rewards.

2. Pre-Decide Your Values:
Before you face a tempting choice, settle in your heart what is truly important. Decide that God’s purpose, your spiritual integrity, and the well-being of others are non-negotiable. This prevents you from being swayed in a moment of weakness.

3. Ask for the Right Things:
In your prayers, train yourself to ask for what aligns with God’s eternal kingdom: souls saved, spiritual power, wisdom, character, and the advancement of the Gospel. This reshapes your desires to match God’s.

Warning: The Deception of “Necessity”
The enemy’s strategy is to make a temporal desire feel like a life-or-death necessity. Like Esau, we can convince ourselves that we “must” have something now, at any cost. This sense of urgency is often a trap to make us trade our long-term destiny for short-term relief.

Conclusion: Praying for a Wise Heart

Pray this:
“Father, thank You for the incredible privilege of choice. Forgive me for the times I have, like Esau, traded my spiritual inheritance for temporary satisfaction. I ask today for a heart that treasures what You treasure. Give me the wisdom to make choices today that will build a glorious destiny tomorrow. When You present me with options, let me always choose the path that leads to life, legacy, and the expansion of Your Kingdom, in Jesus’ name.”

Action Steps:

  • Conduct a “Choice Audit”: Review a recent decision you made under pressure. Was it more like Adeboye’s response (others-focused, eternal) or Esau’s (self-focused, temporal)? Learn from it.
  • Scripture Memory: Memorize Hebrews 12:16-17 to build a spiritual antibody against profane choices.
  • Pray the “Blank Cheque” Prayer: Seriously ask yourself, “If God gave me a blank cheque today, what would I ask for?” Write down your answer and assess it against the values of God’s Kingdom.

Remember: God is always asking. Your life is the answer. Choose in favor of your birthright in Christ, for it contains unshakable, eternal riches.

“…I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19). This is the perpetual call of God.
