RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDENT MANUAL LESSON 29 (22 March 2026)
TOPIC: MEN OF ISSACHAR
BIBLE PASSAGE: Daniel 2:20-23
20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.
MEMORY VERSE:
“And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.” 1 Chronicles 12:32.
INTRODUCTION
Issachar was the fifth son of Jacob and Leah, and the ninth son overall of the patriarch (Genesis 30:17-18). He had four sons (Genesis 46:13), and went with his father to Egypt, where he died and was buried.
Afterwards, his descendants formed one of the tribes of Israel. By the end of the wanderings of Israel through the Sinai desert, they numbered 64,300 fighting men (Numbers 26:23-25). What is most evident is that by the time of David, they were known supremely for their wisdom. They understood the “signs of the times” and how best to live in light of them (1 Chronicles 7:1-5; 12:32).
LESSON OUTLINE 1: UNDERSTAND TIMES AND SEASONS
A. The Bible tells us that:
i There are various seasons (Genesis 8:22; Ecclesiastes 3:1-8).
ii. Times and seasons are in God’s hands and can change (Daniel 2:21a).
B. To navigate times and seasons,
i. God gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding (Daniel 2:21c).
ii. He reveals the deep and secret things to His children (Deuteronomy 29:29; Daniel 2:22).
iii. The Men of Issachar had an understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do. It takes a mature believer to discern the times (Hebrews 5:14).
C. “Understanding the times” also refers to:
i. Having insight into current circumstances, trends, and seasons in which we live (Romans 13:11).
ii. It involves being aware of the cultural, political, social, and spiritual climate (Daniel 2:21-28), and recognising opportunities and challenges (1 Timothy 4:1-3).
CLASS ACTIVITY 1:
Do you have a different or additional insight about “understanding of times”? Share with the class.
LESSON OUTLINE 2: KNOW WHAT TO DO
The men of Issachar understood the signs of the times and knew how to live in the light of them.
To know what to do is to be full of ideas and skills, vision-driven, and strategies. It is the ability to:
- Make informed decisions: Go back to school (get a degree, master’s, PhD), attend conferences, learn a trade, acquire a skill, etc. (Genesis 26:1-3).
- Respond appropriately to challenges and opportunities (Genesis 26:12-22; Matthew 2:13-14; John 2:3-5).
- Be wise and authentic: live a life of impact for the cause of Christ (1 Peter 3:10-11).
- Engage in kingdom activities (Matthew 6:33).
- Fulfil your purpose and calling (John 18:37).
CLASS ACTIVITY 2:
How do you bring pleasure to God?
