35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

LESSON INTRODUCTION:

Generosity is an aspect of God’s character. It is an attractive quality we need to cultivate as God’s children. The opposite of generosity is selfishness, self-centeredness, greed and self-importance. Generosity goes beyond giving money; it also includes offering our time, talents, and resources to meet the needs of others. Generosity has many biblical sources and is related to kindness and goodness, a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23; Proverbs 22:9).

TEACHER’S DIARY

LESSON AIM: To encourage learners to be generous.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through this lesson, students should be able to:
a. Explain the term ‘generosity.’
b. State the reasons for being generous.
c. Mention the conditions for developing a generous heart.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:
a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion, and do class activities and assignments.
b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, and mark attendance and assignment.
c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give assignments.

TEXT REVIEW: Matthew 25:35-40

This passage tells about one of the profound teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. He suggested that whatever good we do to others, especially fellow believers, is a service to Him and it will attract great rewards in Heaven.

A. Using Himself as the one in need, he identified six good deeds, which are:

TEACHING METHOD: The Discussion Method.

TIME MANAGEMENT: The teacher should apply the two-lesson outline of teaching time.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: REASONS FOR BEING GENEROUS

The Teacher should allow the class to discuss reasons that make generosity important under the following point.

God is generous: God, in His unfathomable love, gave humanity His most precious gift, His Son Jesus Christ, for our redemption. It is expedient that we demonstrate this nature (John 3:16; Romans 5:7-8).
A proof of love: Sharing our substance with others is a practical proof of our love for them (1 John 3:17-18).
It enlarges God’s kingdom: Generosity fuels evangelism, missions and church growth (Acts 2:44-47). Like the Philippians, we must constantly support Kingdom projects (Philippians 4:15-17).
It produces blessings: A cheerful giver never lacks (Proverbs 11:25; 2 Corinthians 9:6-8).
Generosity is all-encompassing: Giving flows from a heart that is always willing to share. It includes offering our time, talents, and resources to meet the needs of others (Galatians 6:2, 1 Thessalonians 5:14).

LESSON OUTLINE 2: DEVELOP A GENEROUS HEART

To grow a generous heart, believers must:

Be Selfless: As believers, we must not be selfish (Philippians 2:3).
Give Cheerfully: Giving cheerfully is proof of a generous heart (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Remember the Source: We must remember that God is our source and the one who makes it possible to get all that we have (1 Corinthians 4:7; James 1:17).
Be Compassionate and Empathetic: Find out what is missing and go all out to meet the need (2 Kings 4:11-17). Leave everyone better than you met them (Luke 10:33-35).
Listen to the Holy Spirit: Do not ignore, argue or doubt what the Spirit of God is leading you to do (Acts 10:9-16). Be sensitive to obey.
