RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS MANUAL LESSON 4 (27 SEPTEMBER 2026)

TOPIC: SANCTIFICATION

OPENING PRAYER:

Father, enlighten me about Your sanctification process in Jesus’ name.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

The teacher should review the lesson for the previous week.

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

MEMORY VERSE:

“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

INTRODUCTION:

Sanctification is a spiritual surgery performed by God in the life of a saved soul (Ezekiel 36:26). It is the second work of grace after salvation. Sanctification simply means to make holy, pure and separated unto God (Jeremiah 1:4-5). It is a progressive work of God in man that makes us free from sin and be like Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:23; Romans 8:13). It is vital to understand the process and benefits of sanctification.

TEACHER’S DIARY

LESSON AIM: To enlighten the church about the process of Sanctification and its benefits.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through this lesson, students should be able to:
a. Define sanctification.
b. Explain the process of becoming sanctified.
c. Know the benefits of being sanctified.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:
a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion, and do class activities and assignments.
b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, and mark attendance and assignment.
c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give assignments.

TEXT REVIEW: 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

A. The apostle Paul, while addressing the Church in Corinth on God’s Standard of righteousness, emphasised that it is through sanctification that they are qualified to inherit God’s Kingdom. He started by asking: Know ye not….. Vs. 9a.
B. He further identified some of the unrighteous that will not inherit God’s kingdom, namely:….. Vs. 9b-10.
C. Reminding them that:
i. Such were some…. Vs. 11a.
ii. But….Vs. 11b

TEACHING METHOD: The Lecture Method.

TIME MANAGEMENT: The teacher should apply the two-lesson outline teaching time.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: THE PROCESS

A. To be sanctified,

1. You need to see yourself as you are: filthy and in need of help.
2. Cry to God for deliverance (Isaiah 6:5).
3. Present yourself to the Sanctifier – God (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
4. Surrender your heart to the Holy Spirit (1 Peter 1:2; 2 Thessalonians 2:13).
5. Study the word of God (John 17:17).
6. Soak yourself in the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 9:13-14; 1 John 1:7, 9).
7. Daily surrender to God (Colossians 3:8-10; Romans 6:13).

B. This process can be a painful experience, but:

1. The result is that you are broken and transformed into a new nature (Galatians 2:20; 2 Timothy 2:3-4).
2. The awareness that you do not own yourself anymore helps you prioritise God in everything you do, and whatever does not glorify Him is a no-go area for you (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

How do we avoid things that defile His ‘temple’?

LESSON OUTLINE 2: THE BENEFITS

1. Sanctification represents a believer’s victory over the flesh (Romans 7:24-25), the world (1 John 5:4), and the devil (James 4:7).
2. A sanctified believer will enjoy the ability to easily resist temptation because there is a renewed hatred for sin and lust.
3. Sanctification fosters intimacy with God, increases spiritual strength and stability (Psalm 15:1-5).
4. It also aids a ‘clean record’ for believers, that is, the enemy will not have a foothold over such (John 14:30).
5. It helps believers to be humble and submissive to God and to constituted authorities. The Adamic nature in man is subdued (Romans 8:1-5).
6. It gives the believer control over self (Galatians 2:20; Romans 6:13).
7. It promotes right standing before God and pure intentions of actions and words (Acts 24:16).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

The class should discuss the ways sanctification helps a believer to live a life that honours God.
