BIBLE READING
BIBLE PASSAGE: Philippians 4:10, 13-16
[10] But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.
[13] I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
[14] Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction.
[15] Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.
[16] For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.
MEMORY VERSE:
“Greet Mary, who laboured much for us.” Romans 16:6 (NKJV).
LESSON INTRODUCTION
Gratitude is the quality of being thankful, the readiness to show appreciation for the kindness, help or support received. Sometimes, acts of benevolence are a demonstration of love and/or honour, not necessarily because the giver has in abundance or the receiver is in dire need. Gratitude is often triggered by a deep sense of thoughtfulness and humility (Luke 17:15-17; Romans 16:1-16).
TEACHER’S DIARY
LESSON AIM: To encourage believers to develop a heart of gratitude.
TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through this lesson, students should be able to:

TEXT REVIEW: Philippians 4:10, 13-16
The apostle Paul, in this passage, was full of deep gratitude to the Church at Philippi for their generosity towards him, especially in meeting his physical needs. He says:
i. I rejoice in the Lord….. V10
ii. I can do all……V13
iii. You have done….. V14
iv. You Philippians…. V15
v. Even….. V16
TEACHING METHOD: The Discussion Method.
TIME MANAGEMENT: The teacher should apply the two-lesson outline of teaching time.
LESSON OUTLINE 1: REASONS FOR GRATITUDE
A. Helpers are gifts from God (John 3:27).
i. It takes a heart that is generous and selfless to support others.
ii. God is mindful of our good deeds to others (Hebrews 6:10), so being thankful to others for their good acts is proof that we are God’s children.
B. Gratitude makes givers feel recognised and valued, thereby increasing their likelihood of rendering more help in the future (Luke 17:17-19).
i. Showing gratitude also keeps us from feeling envious, resentful or entitled (Proverbs 14:30).
ii. It fosters humility and joy, which are capable of drawing one closer to God and His blessings.
iii. Thankfulness strengthens your connections and improves the quality of your relationship with others.
CLASS ACTIVITY 1:
Is it a sin to feel there is nothing to be grateful for?
LESSON OUTLINE 2: APPROACH TO GRATITUDE
The Teacher should discuss how to approach gratitude and then use the points below to balance the discussion.
Valuing people’s acts of kindness and showing gratitude is an attitude we should cultivate. To show gratitude:
- Recognise that every act of kindness (whether significant or small) deserves your appreciation (Philippians 4:10).
- Acknowledge by mentioning specifically the help or benefit you received (Philippians 4:16; Romans 16:2-3).
- Communicate your gratitude promptly to avoid it being seen as an afterthought (Ecclesiastes 3:1; Philippians 4:14).
- You may further explain the importance or impact the act has made.
- Reciprocate with kindness according to your ability (Joshua 6:25; 1 Samuel 15:6).
CLASS ACTIVITY 2:
Is it right to always show gratitude in some other ways without using words?

Gratitude is a constructive way to respond to acts of kindness.
