19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
21 And having an high priest over the house of God;
22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

MEMORY VERSE:

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” 1 Peter 2:9.

LESSON INTRODUCTION:

In the Old Testament, Levites were the only tribe, chosen and dedicated as priests, serving as mediators between God and His people. However, this order of priesthood changed when the veil was torn due to the sacrifice of Christ (Matthew 27:50-51). With direct access to the presence of God, every genuine believer in Christ is now a ‘priest’ unto God (Revelation 1:5-6, 5:10). Sadly, some Christians still live as though they need some middlemen between them and God. This lesson will help us understand and embrace our role as priests in Christ Jesus.

TEACHER’S DIARY

LESSON AIM: To teach the church to embrace our role as priests in Christ Jesus.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through this study, students are expected to:
a. Mention the basis of the Believer’s priesthood in Christ Jesus.
b. Identify the roles of Believers as Priests.
c. State the implications of being a Priest as Believers.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:
a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion, and do class activities and assignments.
b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, and mark attendance and assignment.
c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give assignments.

TEXT REVIEW: Hebrews 10:19-22

A. According to the scriptures above, believers have been given the boldness to enter the holiest by the blood of Jesus (A place designated for the High Priest alone to make atonement for the people and himself). Vs. 19
B. Through:
i. A new and living….. Vs. 20.
ii. A high priest who is over….. Vs. 21.
C. We can draw near with:
i. A true heart….. Vs. 22a.
ii. Our hearts….. Vs. 22b.
iii. Our bodies….. Vs. 22c.

TEACHING METHOD: The Lecture Method.

TIME MANAGEMENT: The teacher should apply the two-lesson outline teaching time.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: THE BASIS AND ROLES OF OUR PRIESTHOOD

A. Believers’ priesthood in Christ is based on the following:
i. Christ’s sacrifice: The blood of Jesus grants us bold access to the holiest place (Hebrews 10:19-22).
ii. Priestly redemption: Christ washed us from sin and made us kings and priests (Revelation 1:5-6).
iii. Non-natural descent: Our priesthood is not tied to Levi but to Christ, our High Priest (Hebrews 7:11-12).

B. As believer-priests, we, therefore, have the roles of:
i. Offering spiritual sacrifices such as worship, prayers, good works, giving, and service (1 Peter 2:5).
ii. Mediating through intercession by standing in the gap for families, nations, and the Church (1 Timothy 2:1).
iii. Teaching and witnessing because priests are keepers of knowledge raised to share and declare God’s word (Malachi 2:7; Matthew 28:19-20).
iv. Living holy by setting apart our lives, representing God to the world (Leviticus 21:6; 1 Peter 1:15-16).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

How can believers avoid drifting into vain worship?

LESSON OUTLINE 2: THE IMPLICATIONS

We have direct access (Hebrews 4:16), and this means greater responsibility.
We have been called to a life of service, not status: priesthood is not about title but service in humility (John 13:14-15).
We are to witness to the nations; our priesthood is to “shew forth His praises” to a watching world (1 Peter 2:9).
We are also to await our eternal role, because we shall reign with Christ as priests and kings (Revelation 5:10).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

What can you do to worship God in a way that pleases Him? Discuss.

The doctrine of the priesthood of all believers is not symbolic but practical. If you are in Christ, you are already a priest; live like one daily!
