[4] The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
[5] Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
[6] For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

MEMORY VERSE:

“For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.” Psalm 1:6 (NKJV).

LESSON INTRODUCTION

The first part of Psalm one (verses 1-3) addresses the blessedness of the righteous, while the second part (verses 4-6) addresses the end of the wicked. In this lesson, we shall describe the ungodly as well as look into his doom.

LESSON AIM: To enlighten the students on the evil that awaits the ungodly.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

Describe who the ungodly is.
Highlight what the end of the ungodly will be.
Compare the ways of the ungodly and the righteous.

TEXT REVIEW: Psalm 1:4-6

The Psalmist describes the ungodly like the chaff which the wind drives away. V4b
As a result of this:

i. The ungodly shall not….. V5a.
ii. Nor sinners…..V5b.

The Lord knows the way of the righteous. V6a.
The way…… V6b.

TEACHING METHOD: The Lecture Method.

TIME MANAGEMENT: The teacher should apply the two-lesson outline of the teaching time.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: DESCRIPTION OF THE UNGODLY

The Psalmist describes the ungodly as the reverse of the righteous, both in character and condition – “The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away” (Psalm 1:4).

A. “The ungodly are not so” means:

i. They are led by the counsel of the wicked (Proverbs 16:27).

ii. They are in the way of sinners (Proverbs 4:14-15).

iii. They are led to the seat of the scornful (Proverbs 19:28).

iv. They have no delight in the law of God nor ever think of it.

v. They bring forth no fruit but grapes of Sodom (Romans 1:29-32).

B. “…But are like the chaff which the wind drives away” means:

i. They are of no worth at all in God’s account, no matter how highly they value themselves (Isaiah 17:13-14).

ii. They are vain and empty without the knowledge of God (Psalm 10:4; 14:1).

iii. They have no substance in them (Nahum 2:10).

iv. They are easily driven to and fro by every wind of doctrine and temptation of Satan (Hebrews 13:9; James 1:14-15).

v. They are not steadfast (2 Peter 2:14-15).

vi. They neither have root nor moisture (Mark 4:5-6).

vii. They are destitute of all that is good (Romans 7:18; Proverbs 17:20a).

viii. They are sensual and do not have the Spirit of God (Jude 19).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Students should look inward and rate themselves on whether they are godly or not.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: THE JUDGEMENT OF THE UNGODLY

A. Psalm 1:5 says, “Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgement, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.”

i. On the day of judgement, the ungodly shall be found guilty (Psalm 9:17; Romans 1:18).

ii. They shall bow their head in shame and confusion, and all their pleas and excuses shall be overruled as frivolous (Psalm 44:15; Proverbs 3:35).

iii. Their future state will be determined by an irreversible sentence (Luke 13:27).

B. “..Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous” means:

i. They will be driven away from the presence of the Lord into everlasting destruction (Job 21:17; Hosea 13:2-3).

ii. They shall not stand in the same place with the righteous (Matthew 25:41).

C. Finally, God is angry with the ungodly (Psalm 7:11).

i. Psalm 1:6 tells us that the way of the ungodly shall perish because the very way they have chosen and resolve to walk naturally tends towards destruction (Proverbs 10:29; Proverbs 14:12).

ii. Their way shall perish because all they do is offensive to Him (Psalm 37:20).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

The class should discuss what they can do to avoid the doom of the ungodly.

The activities of the righteous and the ungodly are wide open unto God. He punishes the ungodly and rewards the righteous (Psalm 1:6; Psalm 7:11).

EVALUATION:

Mention the characteristics of the ungodly.

CLOSING PRAYER:

O Lord, uproot every seed of ungodliness in me.
