TOPIC: THE COVENANT MEAL

OPENING PRAYER:

Father, please help me to understand how to rightly partake in Your Covenant meal in Jesus’ name.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

The teacher should allow the assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

BIBLE READING

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 11:24-29.

24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

MEMORY VERSE:

“I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” John 6:51

LESSON INTRODUCTION

The covenant meal is the Holy Communion that is taken as a symbol of the new covenant between God and man through Jesus for the remission of sin (Matthew 26:26-28). Also, taking this meal demonstrates the Lord’s death till He comes again. Our focus is how the meal can be beneficial if taken the right way.

TEACHER’S DIARY

LESSON AIM:

To teach the benefits of the Holy Communion.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

Through this study, students are expected to:

• Learn that the covenant meal is the same as the Holy Communion.
• Understand the conditions attached to taking the Holy Communion worthily.
• Know and be able to mention the benefits of taking the Holy Communion worthily.

TEACHING PLAN:

To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:

1. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the dis-cussion, and do class activities and assignment.
2. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the wellbeing of the class, and mark attendance and assignment.
3. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, con-clude, evaluate the lesson and give assignment.

TEXT REVIEW: 1 Corinthians 11:24-29

Apostle Paul in this passage spoke on his revelation about the Holy Communion that Jesus, the same night He was betrayed:

a. Took bread and when he had given thanks …..V24.

b. After the same manner also He took ….V25.

c. He stated that the constant taking of the Holy Communion is a testament to ……. V26.

d. He went further to caution against taking the Holy Communion in error saying:

e. Wherefore whosoever shall ……..V27.

f. But a man should examine …….. V28

g. For he that eateth …….. V29.

TIME MANAGEMENT:

The teacher should apply the two-lesson outline teaching time.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: CONDITIONS

The teacher should ask the students to mention the conditions attached to taking the Holy Communion worthily.

Thereafter, the teacher should explain the points listed below.

To take the Holy Communion worthily, we must take note of the following conditions:

A Regenerated life. You must be born again (John 3:3). It must be taken by only those who have been redeemed i.e. the Brethren (1 Corinthians 11:33).

It must be taken in memory of our Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 22:19). Christ expects us to remember His ultimate sacrifice (death) for us till He comes (1 Corinthians 11:25-26).

It must be eaten worthily. Do not harbour unconfessed sins; bitterness, envy, unforgiving attitude, unbelief, lust, immorality, etc. (1 Corinthians 11:27; Galatians 5:19-21).

It must be taken under self-examination. You are to examine yourself to avoid sickness, weakness or death (1 Corinthians 11:28-30; 2 Corinthians 13:5a).

It must be taken decently and orderly. It should not be taken in a rowdy manner (Corinthians 11:33-34: 14:40).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Can Children take the Holy Communion? The class should discuss.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: BENEFITS

The teacher should explain that there are several ber fits of partaking in the Holy Communion.

Some of these are:

• The Holy Communion symbolises the body and blood of Jesus that gives eternal life (John 6:53-54).
• It is a desirable meal that gives strength for the journey ahead (1 Kings 19:7-8).
• The Holy Communion is a meal of favour and prosperity (Exodus 12:35-36).
• It is a meal that protects and preserves amid God’s judgement on the wicked (Exodus 12:27

• It aids deliverance (Exodus 12:30-33).
• At the Holy Communion, secrets are revealed (Matthew 26:19-23).
• It is a healing meal (Deuteronomy 29:5-6).
• It is a privileged meal to partake in for all believers in Christ (1 Corinthians 11:24-25).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

Students should share their experience with the class on how the Holy Communion has benefited them.

The Holy Communion is a sure fortification for all believers in Christ. We must desire and maximise every opportunity to partake in it.

TOPIC: 3RD INTERACTIVE SESSION AND QUARTERLY REVIEW

SECTION 1

3RD QUARTER TEST

MARKS OBTAINABLE: 50 MARKS.

TIME ALLOWED: 15 MINUTES.

Coordinators (Parish/Area/Zonal) should set 10 questions from the 12 lessons in the quarter and administer them for 15 minutes. Each question carries 5 marks. Total score should be marked over 50 marks.

SECTION 2

3RD QUARTER ATTENDANCE IN THE SUNDAY SCHOOL AND PARTICIPATION IN CLASS ACTIVITIES

MARKS OBTAINABLE: 50 MARKS

TIME ALLOWED: 15 MINUTES.

Teacher should check the student’s attendance and participation in Sunday School Class Register (R1) and count the number of times the students attended the Sunday School in the quarter. 4 marks should be given for each time the students was present in the quarter, while 2 marks should be given for attending the quarterly review exercise. i.e 4marks x number of times present plus 2marks. E.g (4×12) + 2= 50. Total scores should be marked over 50 marks.

SECTION 3

ASSIGNMENT:

MARKS OBTAINABLE: 100 MARKS.

TIME ALLOWED: ZERO MINUTE BECAUSE THE ASSIGNMENTS ARE MARKED WEEKLY.

Teacher should check student’s assignment and the student’s scores. The assignments should be scored over 100 marks for every quarter. (10 marks for each assignment).

GRADING OF SCORES

TOTAL SCORE= SECTION 1 + SECTION 2 + SECTION 3/200

E.g.= 40+42+70/200=152/200=76%

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Watchfulness is the state of being constantly attentive and responsive to signs of opportunity, activity or danger. In this context, watchfulness refers to the quality of (spiritual and physical) preparation and readiness of a believer to ‘make heaven’ (Matthew 25:1-4). Not all who claim to be Christians are ready for the rapture. It is expedient that believers are prepared and take necessary cautions to avoid disappointment.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: BE PREPARED

A. God gives everybody equal chances to operate in the course of life (Matthew 25:1).

B. Only those who are well prepared will escape being rejected (Matthew 25:1-13).

C. There are certain things believers must be found doing to qualify us for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Some of these include:

i. Living righteously to maintain purity in thoughts, conversation, and actions. (Psalm 24:3-4; 1Timothy 6:5-10; 1 Corinthians 10:12-14).

ii. A daily study, meditation, and obedience to God’s word (Psalm 119:11; 1 John 2:5).

iii. A consistent prayer and fasting life (Luke 21:36; Matthew 9:14-15)

iv. Emotional stability. Do not be controlled by emotions but allow the Holy Spirit to guide you at all times (Romans 8:14; Philippians 4:6-7).

v. Saturating your mind and spirit with spiritual songs and hymns (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).

vi. Obedience to the command to preach the gospel i.e. evangelise (Mark 16:15; Daniel 12:3).

vii. The willingness to forgive, love, and live peaceably with all men (Colossians 3:12-14; Hebrews 12:14). viii. Staying humble no matter the height you attain (Matthew 18:4).

ix. Being mindful of kingdom business by investing your time, energy, and resources (1 Thessalonians 2:8; 2 Corinthians 12:15).

x. A constant fellowship with the brethren (Hebrews 10:25).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Apart from the points mentioned above, what else can you do to be prepared for heaven?

LESSON OUTLINE 2: BE CAUTIOUS

A. The day of reckoning will come for all men (1 Peter 4:17-18).

i. Punishment awaits anvone left behind because of worldly pleasures (2 Peter 2:4-9; Revelation 13:9-10).

ii. God warned His children to take heed lest they are caught unawares.

B. Here are some cautions for believers (2 Timothy 4:1-5):

i. Watch your words (Matthew 12:36; Ephesians 5:4; Colossians 4:6)

ii. Guard your actions. Action speaks louder than words. This has to do with your activities, what you do or fail to do (1 Samuel 2:3; Titus 2:7-8).

iii. Watch your thoughts (Proverbs 23:7:24:12).

iv. Work on any negative character. This has to do with integrity, reputation, probity, honesty, and having strong moral principles (2 Timothy 3:1-6).

v. Do away with bad habits. Habit is a fixed and regular way of doing things. Prayerfully strive to get rid of any bad habit (1 Corinthians 10:31).

vi. Avoid overconfidence (1 Corinthians 10:12). vii. Beware of deceivers and false prophets (Mark 13:5, 22-23).

How do you feel about people with negative energy around you?

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Evangelism refers to the art of preaching of the Gospel. The Greek word for the gospel (euangelion) which means “gospeling” is the same root word for evangelism. Therefore, evangelism is about sharing/spreading the Gospel (message) of Jesus Christ and encouraging others to accept Him as their Saviour and Lord. It is one Great assignment that Jesus left for the disciples then and the believers now.

The sharing of the Gospel can take different forms. One of these is welfare evangelism.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: WELFARE EVANGELISM EXPLAINED

A. Welfare evangelism is one of the ways of spreading the gospel to the sinners and the less privileged by providing relief materials, gifts, and everything that can enhance their well-being.

i. Welfare could mean financial, health, food, care, and other provisions rendered to those who need it.

ii. It comprises orphanage evangelism, hospital evangelism, prison evangelism, and Christian Social Responsibility.

iii. It is a simple mission with a great and lasting im-. pact on the lives of people and society at large. iv. It can be expressed in simple ways such as giving out free bottled water on a hot day, sharing packs of food with the needy on the street, etc.

B. One of the motivations behind this type of evangelism is that the Bible tells us that God’s kindness leads people to repentance (Romans 2:4).

i. One of the main reasons Jesus’ earthly ministry was so effective was because it was rooted in compassion for those who were marginalised, for-gotten, and hurting (Matthew 14:14).

ii. In Luke 5:29, Levi made a great feast after meeting with Jesus.

iii. Jesus was also at the feast and therefore was able to minister to all the people who attended the feast, most of whom were sinners. This is a form of welfare evangelism.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

How can you support the welfare department in your parish to win more souls?

When we show love and kindness (John 6:23-27) to people it becomes easy to bring and retain them.

1. Welfare evangelism gets to the people where they are and through it, God’s love is presented uniquely and indirectly. People are excited when they receive free services with no strings at-tached. It usually arouses curiosity as to why someone would show such kindness (Hebrews 13:16).

2. It has the potential to soften the hearts of the re-ceivers, while the platform serves as an opportu nity to present the gospel of Jesus Christ (Proverbs 18:16).

3. It is a good way to ‘water’ the ‘seeds’ previously sown (1 Corinthians 3:6; Matthew 15:32).

4. Engaging in welfare evangelism is a subtle way of fulfilling the great mandate for those who lack confidence by helping them break free from fear and timidity (Romans 12:10).

5. Through welfare evangelism, believers can show people outside the church that God cares and give them a reason to want to come inside (Acts 2:44-47).

TOPIC: CROSS CULTURAL MISSIONS (PART 2)

OPENING PRAYER:

Father of mercy and grace, open the doors of salvation to the nations that are resisting the gospel of Jesus.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

The teacher should allow the assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

BIBLE READING

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
23 And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

MEMORY VERSE:

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” Matthew 28:20.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Cross-cultural missions involve connecting with people whose culture is different from our own. Thus, we need to make efforts to remove the barrier between the gospel and the people we are ministering to, without changing the gospel message or changing who we are. The gospel should be communicated in a manner that is clearly understood in the culture and worldview of those who are intended to hear it. Today we shall look at the challenges and strategies of cross-cultural missions.

TEACHER’S DIARY

LESSON AIM:

To teach how to overcome barriers to cross-cultural missions

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

Through this study, students are expected to:

• Know some cross-cultural missions challenges.
• Understand some strategies for cross-cultural missions.

TEACHING PLAN:

To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:

1. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the dis-cussion; do class activities and the assignment.
2. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the wellbeing of the class, and mark attendance and assignment.
3. Teach the lesson outlines, summarise, con-clude, evaluate the lesson and give an assignment.

TEACHING METHOD

The teacher should apply the two-lesson outline teaching time.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: CHALLENGES OF CROSS-CULTURAL MISSIONS

In 2 Corinthians 11:23-30, Apostle Paul mentions some of the challenges he faced as a cross-cultural mission-ary. They include:

i.Persecution

ii. Hunger

iii. Shipwreck

iv. Rejection

v. suffering from harsh weather conditions

vi. Infirmity, and so on (2 Corinthians 4:8-10).

Missionaries are often faced with all these challenge and even more:

i. Having to leave one’s family, friends, vocational identity, familiar environment, and, in some cases, modern conveniences to cross geographic, cultural, and/or linguistic barriers can be extremely challenging (Acts 22:2-3; Philippians 3:8).

ii. Many missionaries battle with serious health issues which affect their work in a negative way (Corinthians 12:9).

iii. Language and culture learning takes time and practice and this can be challenging as well.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: STRATEGIES FOR CROSS-CULTURAL MISSIONS

A. Anyone who intends to engage in effective cross-cultural missions must:

i. Be ready to learn new ideologies, cultures, norms, values, language, etc. (1 Corinthians 9:19-22).

ii. Not stick to a single style of communication but learn how to adapt to the culture of the people you are sent to.

iii. Never shift ground on your conviction of faith, despite the respect for the foreign culture (Galatians 6:1).

iv. Develop a friendship atmosphere among the people (Proverbs 18:24).

v. Have a target of how many souls you want to reach and win for Christ within a particular period and do a periodic evaluation of the target (Daniel 12:3).

vi. Be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:4; Galatians 5:16).

B. As a cross-cultural missionary:

i. Paul’s goal was to bring as many people as possible to faith in Jesus (1 Corinthians 9:22).

ii. He adapted his method and his language to the c k ture of the place where he was (Corinthians 9:20).

iii. He learned how to connect with different people so that he could be an effective witness for Christ (Philippians 3:5).

iv. In Athens, Paul spoke to the philosophers using their poetry to make his point (Acts 17:16-34).

v. When he found himself among the Jews, he spoke to them using the Jewish Scriptures and history (Acts 13:13-42), but when he was among the Gentiles, he used the language and references they understood (Ephesians 3:6-8).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

Are you willing to learn new languages for the sake of the gospel?

The missionary should be assured of God’s presence at all times and therefore be encouraged (Matthew 28:19-20).

EVALUATION:

Students should mention four challenges faced by cross-cultural missionaries and also state three strategies for cross-cultural missions.

Choose a different culture from your own, in your country, and write out five strategies you can adopt to reach out to the people with the gospel (2×5=10 Marks).
